Deli meats..

Why exactly cant we have deli meats??? I heard its because of preservatives... WELL...i found the most amazing thing today in the grocery store!!!

Naturel selects  shaved turkey meat!
All natural, no preservatives!

Needless to say, i gobbled it down in record time.
Best sandwich ive ever had! The meat tastes so good and fresh!

I am used to eating deli meat so i went on the hunt for a good one..i just cant go without! Unless its bad for my little bean then i will cut it out but this kind seems to be very good.

Thoughts?

Re: Deli meats..

  • Just eat it! The reason behind the no deli meat thing is listeria. You're more likely to get listeria from melon or lettuce, so eat a turkey sandwich!!

  • Lunch meat is fine. If you're that worried heat it up. Also it's because of listeria, not preservatives.

  • Deli meats seem to be the only thing that sound good for lunch these days. I start toasting my bread and then putting the cold cuts on the bread and putting in the microwave for 20-30 seconds to heat it all up and then its like a melted grilled cheese and turkey or whatever you are eating. Enjoy!

This. However, in general we avoid nitrates and preservative as a regular part of our diet. I think that stuff is crap. I haven't eaten lunch meat in years because it's pumped full of chemical and nitrates, not because of a listeria.

Just an FYI: any company can put "natural" on anything they want. There are no regulations for what is considered natural or what is considered a "preservative." The unrefined sea salt, I used to pickle my local, organic cucumbers is a "preservative" because, through lacto-fermentation, it preserves my cucumbers. The artificial and engineered chemicals in bread that make it not mold for weeks on end, are also preservatives.

If consuming a "better" lunch meat is really important to you, look for something that is organic (preferably from a local farmer) that has no nitrites or nitrates. That will at least be a little bit better than most of the other alternatives out there.

  • Interesting you posted this just now. I am starting at a new school tomorrow (I'm a teacher), and I just got an email that they are giving us lunch tomorrow - free Subway. Well this puts me in a conundrum, because I KNOW I shouldn't be eating cold lunch meat. All they're going to have is turkey and ham, and getting it toasted isn't an option since it will be sitting in the work room. If I don't eat it, though, I'll be antisocial and miss out on lunch with everyone. And I don't want people to KNOW that I can't eat it, because no one knows I'm pregnant! I don't know what I'm going to do, trying to decide if it's worth eating it one time... but it will probably be sitting out for a bit before we get to it, so I just don't know.

  • You CAN eat it. Unless you're eating out of a back alley or off a buffet sitting out all day you can eat it. If someplace properly stores their food you should be fine.

Just take the meat off, and tell anyone who asks your becoming a vegetarian. I'm kind of surprised that they didn't order any vegetarian options, since there is usually at least one in every group.

That being said I ate a couple of deli meat sandwiches when I was preggo with my first and everything was fine.  I am not a huge fan of deli meats so I don't eat them often unless i have a craving.

Thanks for the tip, I was actually thinking about that... they might have vegetarian ones, I just said they were having stuff like turkey and ham because they said they would be "cold" sandwiches. I guess I'm going vegetarian for the day! It just icks me out to think of the subs sitting around in a work room.... And it's my first pregnancy and I'm super nervous about everything.

  • Eat the dang deli meat, people!  The most recent listeria outbreak was McDonald's Happy Meal apples.  Oh noes.

  • With DD#1 - I was so careful.  I did not eat one slice of deli meat from when I was pregnant until when I delivered.  With LO#2 - I have probably had at least 1 deli sandwich a week.  It is something I can eat that doesn't make me want to throw up - so I decided that the listeria risk was worth it.  Plus, it seems lately that there are more listeria outbreaks with fruit and vegetables.

  • I have posted this a 100 times here, and hate to keep doing it, but I think it is really important that people are informed, and then make whatever choice they want for themselves.

The American Pregnancy Association, Mayo Clinic and CDC all have statements that advise pregnant women to heat deli meat to steaming before consuming and to thoroughly wash produce (including melons and other things you don't eat the skins/rinds of).  This is to prevent listeria, which can be deadly to baby.  Pregnant women are 20 times more likely to get it than the general population.  In other words, my husband could eat a piece of meat that had been contaminated and be fine....I could eat the same piece and get sick (and symptoms can show up as long as 70 days later).  Granted, it is very, very rare, but there is still a risk.  Most of the pregnant women I know have followed these guidelines, I don't know if most do in general or not.  But if they do, perhaps that is why the occurrence is low.  Or maybe it is just low in general.

Either way, I think it is good to be informed from credible sources and then decide what is best for you and your baby.

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

No there isn't. I don't know a single person IRL that is vegetarian. That includes my place of work.

Be sure to avoid melon as there are current recalls for those for listeria. Lettuce recalls have been more recent than the deli meat recall that was back in the 90's. That's right- you are basing your choice off 1 incident in the 90's. There hasn't been a deli meat recall for listeria since then. There are yearly ones for fruit. Those are never included in the "eat it and die" list.

Maybe it's a regional thing. I've know at least one vegetarian or vegan in all my friend and work groups. There are several vegetarians in my family. At my last job, half the staff was either vegetarian or vegan and even when the youth group at my church orders meals for the group they always at least order one thing w/out meat.

Sucks about those apples.  Had a bunch with DD earlier today.  (That's usually where I hear about listeria--produce.)

I avoided Subway with DD but today, NOTHING sounded good but Subway.

I agree with this. As a pediatric critical care nurse, I've seen children who have survived a listeria infection while in their mothers' wombs and have witnessed extremely devastating effects...severe mental retardation - unable to eat, walk, speak, interact with their environment with only moaning, groaning or grimacing.  If listeria does not cause a miscarriage in a pregnant woman, it can cause extremely devastating effects on the fetus. After what I've seen from experience, it's just not worth it but it's up to you to take the risk and I do know many pregnant women who eat deli meat and do fine.

Not true. You heat it to steaming to kill any bacteria living on the meat. As long as you don't let it sit around after you're done heating it, you're fine. You can let it cool before eating. It would take at least 3-4 days sitting out for it to start growing the bacteria again.

My point was that women on here quite regularly make very flippant comments like "eat the ___ deli meat" in all caps to other women....not realizing that there are real, devastating outcomes of exposure to listeria in pregnancy, as was just shared by a pediatric critical care nurse.  I just feel that those type of comments are unnecessary, not helpful, and disregard the pain of families who have been through such a loss.

Glad to know you didn't intend it that way. And my point is that people need to relax and stop being so flucking bossy and dramatic. Okay no deli meat AT ALL okay then no vegetables, no fruit, etc. If you want to do that that's your choice, but I don't understand why this topic gets brought up 3093409309390309 times a week with the same damned arguments every time. No one said no deli meat at all.  My point was and remains that credible instituations including the American Pregnancy Association, Mayo Clinic and CDC recommend that pregnant women heat it up first.  They also recommend thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables for the same reasons.

I get tired of seeing the "my doctor said it is fine so everyone can eat it!" posts.  My response to that is that your doctor's advice is in direct contradiction to these organizations that employ many, many doctors that are top in their fields.  In my opinion, that is irresponsible.  I think it is fine to say "this is what these orgs state, this is my opinion and here is why".  Women should be informed and then can make whatever choices they want.

I have no interest in debating this topic.  But I will post on every one of these threads I see so that women do have the facts because there is way too much "advice" thrown around on here with no basis in reality.

And I just disagree with you on the previous comment.  If someone posted "LET THE KID SLEEP ON HIS ___ STOMACH FROM BIRTH" I would find that equally insensitive to SIDS loss moms.  We can just agree to disagree.

    EAT THEGODDAMNEDD LUNCH MEAT!!!!

Rora I love you right now.

Hopefully you never get to experience the scenarios that the pediatric critical care nurse shared on this thread.

Is that a threat? It certainly sounds like you ARE actually kind of wishing that on me, just so you can prove your point. How sweet of you.

Seriously?  Of course it is not a threat, and I feel that it is quite a stretch for you to imply such a thing.  However, if that is genuinely what you assumed, I apologize...if you read my post history I think you would quickly figure out that is not the kind of person I am.  I would not wish a stillbirth or infant illness on anyone ever and provide nothing but support to my fellow loss moms.

It's really beating a dead horse at this point. It has nothing to do with other people's losses AT ALL. Rora in NO WAY demeaned them or mentioned them. Hence, rora's post is flipping hilarious.

Well then, you're right - it seems we'll just have to agree to disagree because I still do not feel that simply making a comment out of frustration with something that is debated very often since people can't seem to use the search function (which I admit is sucky) or google (much better way to search TB), means you're being insensitive to people who've experienced loss.  It's called snark, we have a lot of it. It has nothing to do with other people's losses imo.

  • I am not new here, and am familiar with board snark.  I don't like it, but I do know what it is.

Having spent a year on the late loss board, I am going to have a different opinion on this than many others, and I am fine with that.

I wish you well in your pregnancy.

I never said you were new. I'm sorry for your loss, and I wish you well as well.
