Baby gifts

We have several couples friends who have had children recently. We rarely see them due to location, jobs, kids etc. - maybe 1-3x/year at most. Most did not give us a gift when our kids were born, nor did I necessarily expect one. Still, I feel like I'd like to send them something (a gift) to congratulate them on their babies. After my kids were born, I know how much I appreciated getting something from random friends that let me know they were thinking of me and my family. Most of the kids of these couples are 3-9 months old at this point. Would you rather give/receive a cute outfit/pajamas/books etc, or a small giftcared to BRU or Gymboree or somewhere?

I think it would really depends on the couple. Are they the type of person who has just about everything....then I would go with a gift card. For me I think I would like something more personal, like a book that was helpful for you or a product that you love using for your children.

I think outfits are tricky because I never know what size to get (Eli was already wearing 9 month clothes when he was 5 months old).  Gift cards are certainly the easiest and you really can't go wrong with those, but a book or small toy might be a little more thoughtful?  My family has a tradition of always signing the inside of a book given as a gift so you always know who gave it to you and when.

I would say gift card.  At this point they have everything they need but as kids grow we need more so its always helpful.  Plus all those things they received at the shower are used up (lotions, shampoo, diapers, wipes, newborn cloths) so they can purchase things they need.
