Baby Names

NN for Phoenix?

My brother and his GF just had a baby girl and they named her Phoenix.

GF has been calling her Phe Phe as a nn, but I can't get over the association I have with FiFi, which is what I think all poodles are named!

I know ultimately it is up to them what they call her, and I am probably just being bitchy (which you can totally call me out on!), but does anyone have a suggestion for other nns?  She is an adorable little thing, and so far I have just been calling her Phe.

Re: NN for Phoenix?

  • You need to call her what her parents want you to call her, which is either Phoenix or PhePhe. It's very disrespectful to come up with your own thing to call their child. She's her child and they got to pick her name. The rest of the world has to call her by her name.

  • It doesn't need a NN, IMO.

I guess I needed to be told twice, lol!  I know it is their choice what their child is called, but truth be told, my brother isn't crazy about the name. I guess I was wanting to give him some ideas so he could have a chance to get used to it!  He calls her Phe as well, so I feel ok with that.

I really wasn't trying to be disrespectful, and I know GF's mom has already come up with her own nn for the baby (but of course grandma's get special privileges!) so I thought I'd ask!

ETA: when I was growing up, different aunts had different nns for me that my parents didn't call me. I liked it, but I can see how a parent could be offended by that!

I totally 100% disagree with this. I don't see anything wrong with different family members coming up with nicknames as long as they are respectful. Especially aunts and uncles. I think that nicknames are a way people have adapted to connect with people. Sometimes parents exclusively have nicknames and sometimes other people have nicknames. I had one uncle who called me Whinnie Pooh and he was the only one. There is nothing wrong with that.

  • It's only 2 syllables.  Why does it need a nn?

I don't get the name to begin with anyway...

  • I met a little girl once whose full name was Nixie.  Given the "nix" at the end of the Phoenix, maybe that could work? I'm not advocating for the nn or anything, it was just a suggestion.

Agree. ...but the first thing that popped into my mind was Feenie. lol That won't work.
