No Caffeine

My husband is such a freakazoid about me having the smallest amount of caffeine. I have been craving iced hazelnut from Starbucks and he was going to be near a Starbucks so I'm like please pick one up for me.

He's all I'll get you a decaffeinated one. I'm like "you better not"

and he really did bring me a decaf iced hazelnut and it's soooooo gross. lol

i see i'm going to have to sneak off of bed rest to get my own iced hazelnut.

  • Well it's a good thing that 1. He isn't your doctor and 2. You're a grown woman and not his child.

Seriously, if you can't stand up for yourself when he's being ridiculous and not relying on facts, I don't know what to tell you.

It's really not that serious. this was definitely a light hearted post. and i can stand up for myself so it's fine that you don't know what to tell me.

my husband is extra and since we have complications with this pregnancy he goes to an extreme with small things and i love him for it. but at the end of the day i do what i want and what is safe. so i'm ok.

again, this was light hearted post. i'm not seeking help.

  • Hey there!! My husband was the same way, until I showed him an article that explained the research that was done on caffeine. The only real studies that have been done have compared women who drink no caffeine and women who drink 8 cups of coffee a day. The studies or so inconsistent!! I am searching for the article to attach it for you!! Have your hazelnut coffee, but get the one from Dunkin!! It has less caffeine in it!!! Starbucks over does it sometimes. Oh..and ignore people being nasty on this thing!! The purpose of these blogs is to support each other, not tear each other down. I dont know why people are so quick to jump down everyones throats!!! God Bless!!!

  • Caffeine doesn't have flavor, it should taste the exact same just without caffeine.

With that being said you can supposedly have 300mg a day safely.  You can check their website for the amount of caffeine in each item.

well actually, when you are decaf'ing coffee it goes through a process called Swiss Water Process. And the coffee bean actually does lose some of it's flavor in order to remove caffeine from it. if you are using pretty awesome quality coffee beans, then decaf might not be so bad and the integrity of the flavor wouldn't change much.

but either way...i taste a difference.

  • I love me some Starbucks too! I looked up the the caffeine content of a venti caramel macchiato and it has 150 mg of caffeine. So I can have one a day. I normally get half caf though.

    Ditto goofy.

I was told 300mg/day was safe, though I don't get near that much (mainly because the thought of coffee is gross to me while pregnant).

Also, the March of Dimes is not the end-all-be-all of pregnancy resources. Yes, they do an awful lot & are a wonderful organization. But even THEY say that the range of "acceptable" is variable from study to study & doctor to doctor. They are stating their (informed) opinion, not canon fact.

I'm pretty sure chill pills don't contain caffeine, so you should be safe to follow goofy's recommendation. Or would you like the March of Dimes to issue a statement to that effect first?

  • He's being a little silly, you can have caffeine - I'd just be careful of size at Starbucks. [I'm not clear if you got an iced coffee or iced latte but a venti iced latte comes with 3 shots = 225 mg of caffeine which is a hefty amount especially if you haven't been having it a lot.]

I also bet if he'd lied & just not mentioned that it was decaf [or had the barista not mark decaf] you wouldn't have noticed a difference! Sorry it sucked though.

  • i agree with ppl saying it's okay in moderation. in fact, with my last pregnancy, my doctor reccomended a small hit of caffiene (soda or coffee) over tylonal if i had a headache.  9 times out of ten a small hit was just the ticket for me.  this pregnancy i've been enjoying my morning cup of coffee and the occasional soda in the afternoon to get me by. of course this time around i have a toddler to run after, so there's that.

stressing over one cup of coffee is really worse for you than just enjoying your caffiene and moving on IMHO.

It depends on what kind of drink. Not all their venti drinks have the same amount. Here's the link to the Starbucks page that says 225mg.

    Yep. My DH takes our coffee seriously and if you get nice beans and yes, both the brew and the processing of the beans makes a difference in the flavor you can absolutely taste the difference. You can also taste a good decaf from a bad decaf, i think it has to do with the process of extracting the caffeine, but it's DH who is the beverage geek, not me ;

All I know is that I miss a nice cup of fully caffeinated espresso every now and again!

I would have to disagree with you... before I knew I was pg... so that in between stage when you became pg and when you missed your period, I noticed that if I drank Pepsi with caffeine that it tasted awful, I could drink a pepsi with no caffeine and have it taste fine... but who does that :)

  • I, too, taste a difference between regular and decaf but I also drink my coffee black and only have 1/2 to 3/4 cup now since we brew it quite strong.  When I go to Starbucks, however, I usually get a decaf latte of some sort and even with half the amount of syrup (because the usual amount is WAY too sweet) I cannot taste the difference.
