I plan to use Bum Genius 4.0s since they have by far the best reviews, are simple to use (this is my first time trying CDing) and LO should be able use them for most all of their diapering years. However, I've heard that babies don't really fit into them until closer to 10 lbs, so we'll probably just use disposables until LO is that big. As first time parents, I figure we'll have enough learning to do those first couple of weeks without adding CDs to the mix anyway.
26 years old, married since June 2009, DS born 1/19/13
I'm a first time mom and am pretty determined to try CDing. I would definitely recommend checking out a page on Facebook called Cloth Diaper Swap. You can get really good prices on CDs that are mainly in excellent used condition.
I just recently bought 4 diapers for $36 and they look brand new and each came with an insert. They are coolababy OS pockets.
Like I said, I don't know how well they work or how long my adventure will last but I'm hoping that it works well for my baby & I
I have been researching non stop on the best brands and types.... I went to a CDing store last night and learned a ton!! It was awesome and now I am SO excited about cloth diapering!
I plan to use Mother-ease at home... they are a two part CDing system... with the diaper (plus liners for overnight) and a cover. There are 2 sizes, S (8-20lbs) and L (20-35lbs). I plan to buy about 15 of those.
I also plan to purchase about 25 of the Kawaii all on in one pocket CDs. A friend of mine uses them and absolutely loves them. They are much less expensive and work great and are so dang cute! They are one size fits all 8-36lbs and have adjustable snaps so the diapers fit perfect. They come in super cute colors and the cover is part of the diaper. They come wiht two pads as well.... one for day use and to add in for night use as baby sleeps longer at night.
Has anyone thought about detergent? I have heard GREAT things about www.crunchyclean.com .... the store is a mom and her daughters and the actually make the detergent. Both daughters were born with birth defects... they have a great story and their product is wonderfuL!
Do you guys plan to CD full time? Will you be sending LO to daycare in CD?
We've tried a lot of options, and I would really recommend every try a bunch, either through a trial or just buying and reselling. The BGs and other pockets didn't end up being favorites at our house.
I second this. It all depends on the baby. I don't mind pockets and we use them some, but DD leaked out of BG 4.0s for the first year. They fit her skinny legs now on the lowest rise. BG Elementals on the other hand, have fit her great since we started CDing her at a couple of months old.
We have an assortment of different diapers and it works out well since they all seem to fit her better at different times. Elementals and Flips are consistantly my favorite. Happy Heinys, 4.0s, Fuzzibunz, and GDiapers are all on my not so great list. Like I said though, it all depends on the baby!
We use prefolds with Thirsties duo covers, bg aio sized (since dd1 they have be discontinued, but we have xs, s, m, and l), and bg pockets for night/naps.
I just bought 3 of the bg aio freetime to try out and Add to our stash as some of our sized are getting tired.
Eta: we use Planet detergent. I have a couple different dryer balls that we use now instead of bounce sheets. You use so little detergent a bottle lasts forever. Planet occasionally goes on sale at my local Kroger.
Bum Genius 4.0 OS, Alva Babies OS, FuzziBuns Elite OS, and Kawaii OS so far. I am still deciding what we are going to do regarding the newborn period. We have discussed doing disposables or inserts.
FTM here, too, but the family I grew up babysitting (4 boys- started when the oldest was just 8 mos) used CDs. I want to use them, too. I was looking at doing green mountain prefolds with a thirsties duo wrap or the bumgenious covers. As far as detergent, there is a local company that makes natural laundry soap that we already use and will use with the CDs.
We use bumgenius 3.0s with aplix. We also have some Flip covers and stay-dry inserts, but we usually only use these as a secondary option.
We tried several different brands with DS was a baby and BG worked out best for us!
ETA: As far as detergent goes when DS was a baby I actually mixed up my own soap to use. That worked until he hit toddlerhood and diapers got erm... more interesting. After some trial and error I went to powdered All Free & Clear. Crunchy Clean is a great option. Sometimes a little trial and error is needed to figure out exactly which brand of detergent and wash routine is the best for you. Although, at first, it's typically pretty simple. Like I said, we had to switch things up once DS got a little older. GL!
We started with DD from day 1 in the hospital. For the newborn stage we used prefolds (Green Mountain) and covers (Thirstiest Duo). Worked great while she was too tiny for the other diapers! The prefolds also make AMAZING stuffers for pockets later . We had 24 prefolds and 4 covers (I am adding another 12 for this baby just in case I fall behind with laundry dealing with 2 kids!).
Once DD was big enough for other CDs (around 3mo for us) we used a combo of pockets (10 Fuzzibuns), prefolds/covers (12 infant sized Green Mountain and 4 covers in size 2), and fitteds (4 Goodmama fitted.....used as overnight diapers).
I plan on getting a few Charlie Bananas pockets for this LO (I borrowed one from a friend and really liked it!) and new wet bags but that is it! We bought all diapers in Gender neutral colors since we were Team Green with DD.....comes in handy since this baby is a boy!

exactly this. We already bought 24 of these diapers. According to my sister that should have me doing laundry every 2-3 days.
I won't be CDing this time, but with DS I used Green Mountain prefolds and BumGenius OS 3.0s. For covers my favorite was Thirsties, but we also used Bummies and Imse Vimse which were also good. Oh and at night we used a fleece Sugarpea cover that was awesome.
My favorite wipes were Kissaluv.
We used two Blueberry/Swaddlebee diaper pail liners, but I can't remember what wet bag I used.
We exclusively use fitteds with DD. Occasionally an AI2 or BGE, but 99.9% of the time we are in fitteds (either coverless or with wool). We used pockets at first but quickly discovered that we much preferred fitteds. Now that she is older I don't think pockets would work well for her at all (though I have not tried in a long time).
#2 will also be a fitteds baby. I plan to use some prefolds at first, too. We didn't CD DD as a newborn (started at 3 months) so I am hoping I can figure out the prefolds. A lot of mamas love them for newborns.
ITA with the pp about trying different kinds. We did a trial with our DD at 3 months and got to try 8 different diapers (different types and brands) and only one of those is in our rotation now. I also rec taking a class if you have any nearby. The class we took was invaluable for us as we were SO overwhelmed trying to learn about them 100% online. There is a ton of info and hands on is really the best way to figure out what you like and what works for you
We use prefolds with DD and used them with DS as well. They are a little bulkie but they were the cheapest way to do them and easy to use and wash once you get the hang of it.

We have a mish-mash of all sorts of CD. My favorite are my WAHM's (fb nana pants by betsy, LOVE) but with a newborn I'm thinking prefolds and woolies at first. We have about 20 already but I need to get nb ones plus my aunt is giving us all her son's as he outgrows them.
Word of warning to ladies thinking about cding...once you start buying them you can't stop.
FTM but we plan on bg 4.0 OS pockets and fb elite OS pockets. The fb have an adjustable elastic in the legs and waist and our family turns out some chunky kids with big legs so I'm not too worried about it.
Worst case scenario we have to buy disposables for a few weeks. And my MIL pointed out that some people won't believe us when we say we want to cd so we'll still get disposables at the shower.
Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!
I CD DS and have a nice variety. I use BG 4.0 at night because they are super absorbant and very very rarely leak. During the day, my go to diaper is the Kawaii pockets. I find that they have been very sturdy and I haven't had a leak from them during the day. The only time I experienced a leak was at night which is why I stopped using them at night. I also have Blueberry/Swaddlebees (1 of each but it's the same company), Fuzzibunz, Happy Heiny's, Grovia and Flips.
The only one I don't really like is Fuzzibunz. I find that it leaks every time I put DS in one. I only have 3 and only use them when all the other diapers are in the wash or dirty. I've heard so many good things about them but for whatever reason they just don't work for me.
I didn't start CDing DS until he was about 5 or 6 months so this LO will be my first time CDing a newborn. I already have some prefolds from GMD, 10 workhorse fitteds, 3 Thirsties covers, 3 Kissaluv fitteds, 2 Lil Joey's, 2 Swaddlebees Simplex newborn, and 2 Grovia's. I would like to get more prefolds to round out the newborn stash.

I adored Northern Essence diaper rash cream: https://www.northernessence.com/catalog.php?category=64
When I was using just BGs, I started using Bummis flushable liners and they worked great!
For laundry detergent, I used Allen's Natural Laundry. Gallon with the pump will last you forever.
All of these products worked great for me, and I would use them again if I were cloth diapering this time.
I'm too lazy to type so I c/p'd from our registry
