A/S Timing

The receptionist at my MFM's office seemed a little confused yesterday about my upcoming appt on Thursday.

I'll be 'technically' 17w,2d on Thursday and it was mentioned we'd do the a/s with my MFM (wasn't sure if that meant the next appt or just in general) but when I called to check to get a better idea of the appt length due to it being twins - she told me that she didn't see a note but that it probably was...

Did anyone have their a/s before 18 weeks?

I was reading the best timing for cardiac evaluation was between 20 - 22 weeks.  It seems odd to do it before 18 weeks but maybe I'm wrong.

Re: A/S Timing

  • Maybe call and ask if it can be pushed back 2 weeks. With my son I had my anatomy scan at 18 weeks, and they couldn't get a clear picture of the heart, so I had to go back for an echo at 22 weeks. This time it's scheduled for 21 weeks in the hopes they'll get everything they need.

  • I scheduled mine this time around for 20 weeks.  With DD I had it at 18 weeks and they weren't 100% sure on the sex and they needed me to come back for more measurements.  It is killing me, butI hope these extra two weeks they will get all the measurements they need.

  • With my son I had bleeding issues around 17 weeks. So I was at the MFM office for a u/s then. They had me go back 2 weeks later to do the a/s. They felt it was just too early to get all the proper measurements.

  • Mine is scheduled for 19 weeks. Hopefully they will be able to see everything.

Ditto! I wanted to have it done before I get back to teaching

  • I went to my 16w appointment and tried to weasel in the soonest A/S I could get. I am so excited! The nurse told me I had to wait until at least 20 weeks to get the best measurements possible. That does seem early...

  • I had mine yesterday at 18w2d and they were able to get very clear pictures of everything. I know that a lot happens each week so it is very possible that 17w would be a bit early....

  • We are getting ours at 20w. DD1 has a heart defect so we are getting a fetal echo at 23 wks. They said the best time to really see the heart for the echo is between 22-24 weeks.

  • If you'd be more comfortable waiting until 20 weeks you can change your appointment. I doubt they'd set up an appointment that early if they thought they couldn't get the measurements they needed but pushing it off might prevent you from having to go back in a few weeks to get more measurements.

    My a/s isn't until 20w5d.

  • Mine was at 18w6d and we could very clearly see the heart and she got all of the info she needed.

  • It may just be a monthly visit. I go to the dr this week but my a/s is not for another 3 weeks. I'll be 20 weeks then.

  • My OB doesn't like to do the scan before 20 weeks. I'll be having mine exactly at 20 weeks. 17 weeks does seem early.

  • I am having mine a day before I'm 18 weeks, but I am high risk so that might have something to do with the scheduling.

  • Mine is scheduled for 16w6d which seems really early to me. My doctor said I'll be far enough along at that point but I have my doubts. For those who had early ones and had to go back, is there a downside to having to do that? In my mind it would be bother chance to see LO.

ETA: My OB doesn't like to wait until 20 weeks. She typically schedules them at 18 weeks.

  • I have my A/S at 19w5d; hopefully it's close enough to the 20 week mark to get some clear shots.
