Amnio for Fetal Lung Maturity

I am 36 w 2 days and had an amnio done for fetal lung maturity because the doctor was wanting to do the c-section on 8/14 (which would be 35w3d) because I have a unicorniate uterus (only 1/2 of a normal size one!) and the baby is almost 7 lbs and the fluid level is getting low.

He told me with a result of 50 he would know the lungs are mature and would proceed.  He took two viles of fluid, one to test quick at the hospital, but if it was a little low, he would send the other off to a larger lab and I would get the results in 2 days.  He saw no reason in her lungs not being mature, but it is common to get this done with early elective c-sections.

The results came back as a 7.  My doctor was irritated.  They seem to think there was a problem with the test in the lab.  They said if it was in the 30s, they would just worry that her lung maturity was just behind, but he sees no way that her lungs would be so immature since 37 weeks is technically full term, and I'm almost there.

Just wondering if anyone else had an issue like this, and if so, did the second test come back okay?

Ofcourse I'm super scared, because even if it did come back as super immature lungs, she can't stay in there forever.  In 2 weeks my amniotic fluid level went from a 14 to an 8. . .  So he is going to have to take her soon regardless. . .

Re: Amnio for Fetal Lung Maturity

  • I've not had an amnio for an L:S ratio but I know a little bit about them. My question is were you given betamethasone injections? (steroids for lung development?) If so, I would definitely expect a higher number. Given you have a bicornate uterus I would think they would have given you steroids earlier in the pregnancy but every doc is different.

If they didn't give you steroids, Im not sure about the 7, it does sound low, but is it possible your dates are wrong? Even 1-2 weeks would change the outcome dramatically.

Your AFI is still within normal although it does look like its headed in the wrong direction. I'm hoping they will do another AFI before too long. Drink like crazy everyday, see if you can help that number.
