HELP! Constipated!!

I hate to ask this - but I am so nervous. I have been extremely constipated and that is not what upsets - it is all the straining and pushing. Can this hurt my baby? I am so afraid of having a miscarriage from pushing so hard! Please help -

Re: HELP! Constipated!!

  • No you won't hurt your baby but please do yourself a favor and drink lots of juice, water and eat some fiber! Hemmeroids are no fun!

  • Try some prunes. They always help me. But try not to strain, it does more harm than good to your body.

  • Straining isn't going to hurt your baby, but as PP said you don't want to deal with hemorrhoids!  You need to figure out something to help keep you regular.  It might be as easy as fruit and water.  You HAVE to take in lots of water to flush your system out.  Extra fiber and things like that aren't going to help unless you also have enough water coming in.

  • I have been told that Colace is okay to take... I was on Zofran, which caused me miserable constipation, and the pharmacist says this doesn't stay in your system and was safe to take. I mean, I still checked it out online, but...

I hope it goes away soon... sorry you're suffering!

  • Ooohh I hear ya! And same for me with the zofran- makes it much worse. I just started taking this, and things have already picked up a bit.

  • 1) dried fruit or prunes

    2) magnesium oxide 400 mg is safe, prevents headaches, and has a laxative effect

    3) you can try switching your iron supplement to reduce constipation. I take Floradix liquid iron.

I am very regular thanks to the above. ;-)

  • I don't think it can cause a miscarriage but you can definitely get hemorrhoids if you don't get it under control.

    Fiber + water.

  • I had this problem bad and was worried just like you. Especially since after on bm I had some spotting and it freaked me out. I talked to my dr. and he told me to take colace twice a day. I only remember to take it once a day with my prenatal but if I don't take it for a few days things get backed up again. I also drink a lot of fluids. I tried the prunes and prune juice and just couldn't do it. Hope things work out for you.

  • Eat some beans. It has helped me.
