Any wool experts?

I've been looking a local sources to buy wool roving to make my own wool dryer balls but no such luck. A local farmer offered to sell me raw wool an he said I would have to wash it and comb it, but I don't know how. I've look online but can't find anything on that. I'm looking into it because the price he offered is hard to pass up I could male lots and give them as gifts for pennies. But I don't know if it's worth it if I have to do all the work (wash, comb) and spend on supplies.

Re: Any wool experts?

  • Might want to do a search for 'preparing fleece.' I did a quick search and found some hits. Also, combing the fleece is called carding. I bet there are YouTube videos for the things you seek.
  • It would help to know the proper names for this process--ha ha. Thanks!

I tried with wool yarn and made a few but I feel that they take longer to make and are more expensive than using roving.

  • Maybe you could ask the farmer for a little help on what supplies you will need and where to get them. It isn't the most complicated process, but it does take some time. Also keep in mind you could sell extras on someplace like Etsy to help offset the cost of supplies!
