Are pet gates baby-safe?

Background: I have a 3 bedroom house but I have 3 semi-adopted boys so there is no room for a nursery at this time. My oldest is 16 so this should change before my baby's 2nd birthday.

I also have 2 dogs, and I would like a dog-free baby zone for tummy time and independent play when the baby is older. I have a sun room that is large enough to section off a 8 foot play area, but I don't know how to physically divide the space. I was thinking shelves but I'm also in earthquake country so they have to be low; I also thought of one of those extended pet gates but I'm worried about little fingers getting pinched or the bars being too far. How do I tell if it's baby/toddler safe?

Any other ideas? My largest dog is a GSD but he's an obedient non-jumper, it only takes about 2' tall to keep him out. My smallest dog can squeeze through about 6" or under about the same width as well as climb things; he's crafty.

  • What about something like this?

You can get several and put them together for larger areas too.

Here's one at Walmart  https://www.walmart.com/ip/North-States-Superyard-Xt-Gate/8457890?findingMethod=rr I know they have them at Target but it didn't pop up on my search.

I foster puppies and dogs who are sick/injured and we have used these to keep them IN and I'm sure it will keep them out with a little training.

  • I have the top pictured playyard that I have made into a semi circle to keep the toddlers from climbing into the baby swing, etc. I attached one side to a leg of the swing for comfort, but it's otherwise quite sturdy in the shape its in, despite being a "no" in their diagram.
