Curious Dr. Appt this morning

This may be a post and run, since I have a ton of stuff to catch up on from our power outage yesterday.  Sorry in advance.   Also, sorry it's so long.

I had my 36 week appt this morning with the NP at my OB's office.  She did the GBS swab (No booty swab!! YAY!)   However she mentioned a few things to me that I'm not sure I should be concerned about or not.

She said that my urine showed sugar in it this morning and it has the last few appointments.   My OB has never mentioned the sugar issue and never advised me to cut back on my sugar.   I passed my 1 hour GT with flying colors.  The NP told me to cut way back on sugar and to not have anything sweet right before my next visit.

She also mentioned my weight gain.  I apparently gained 7 pounds in 2 weeks.  Most of that is fluid, which I was led to believe is pretty common in the final weeks of pregnancy.   And, I have had some impressive swelling.   My OB never mentions weight.

NP also told me my fundal height is measuring at 37 weeks, but not to be concerned because I'm at 36 and half weeks so that doesn't mean anything.

I guess my question is...I got a lot more info out of my NP than I usually do from my OB, however, she sounded concerned about some of the stuff that obviously my regular doctors have seen and not been concerned with.   Should I be concerned or just chalk it up to a worrywart NP?

Also...just a vent.  She asked if I had spoken to my OBs about epidurals and such.  I told her I was planning on going med free and she says, "Just remember, you don't have to be a hero!"   WTF???  I really hope she doesn't end up being the one on call when I deliver.  She was nice enough, but I feel she'd stress me out more than anything else.

ETA:  on a positive note, it appears BabyAB is head down!  He's not engaged yet, but he's at least familiar with what he's supposed to be doing.  :-)

  • I would call your doctor and leave a message for him to call you back.  Ask him the questions you posted here and voice your concerns about the NP.  She may have caught a few things he overlooked or she's being a worry wort.  But he'll be able to check your chart/file out and see what's going on & ease your worries.

This. I'd be especially curious about the sugar levels.

  • Two weeks ago I gained 9lbs in 3 weeks and fundal height went an extra inch.. But yesterday I clocked in 4lbs down and measuring back on target.  My doctor seemed very unconcerned, and said if you look at my weight and fundal height over a six week span, it is just fine.  So what you experienced sounds similar-- I wouldn't worry.  I'd call and ask about the sugar, but would not worry unless they tell you to.

While it's nice if everyone at L&D want to help you achieve a med free birth, it's most important that you and your partner are committed.  I hired a doula this time around for extra support, as last time it didn't work out.  You might look into that-- the nurses don't do too much anyways and are in and out of the room, in my experience.  If you want someone there supporting and helping you labor naturally the whole time, you might consider a doula.

  • Thanks for the feedback.   She did ask if I had anything sugary before my visits.  I do drink a coke in the morning (I don't drink coffee in the summer) so that's probably what the sugar issue is, but I just didn't know why SHE would bring it up as a concern when it's been showing up in previous weeks without mention to me.    I definitely will call and follow up with my normal OB.

I think maybe I just got way more info for 8:30 in the morning than I was prepared for.  lol...
