Circle monogram concern?

Would you be reconsidering your child's name choice if you knew the circle monogram order of their initials would be less than desirable?  We are looking at initials of TDR... if ever he has a circle monogram, then, it would be TRD (go ahead - say it).  I am sure I am way overthinking it at this point, but I thought I would check in with you ladies and get your thoughts.  DH and I analyze every name from every direction - just how we're built!

Re: Circle monogram concern?

  • I think you're reading way too much into it.

I guess there's two ways to look at it. If I felt great about the name and that was my only concern, then, no, those initials wouldn't bug me at all.  However, if I felt little doubts about the name and the monogram thing really got under my skin, I might take it as a sign to reconsider how much I like the name I'd chosen.

    Fair points - thanks.

As for the monogramming, of course I will monogram his undies!  ;)

  • It wouldn't bother me at all but that's probably because I don't get/don't like monograms. The only thing I've ever had that's monogramed is a set of towels that were a gift. So, for me, this wouldn't even be a consideration.

  • My kids have things from Kelly's Kids that are monogrammed, but I have never liked the circle monogram. You can easily get a monogram without the circle option.

  • I'm in the minority. .. and wish I had thought out monograms when I was picking names.  I don't like the way one of my child's monograms looks and sounds.  If I had thought ahead, I would have picked a different middle name.

    Yes, it would bug me.

The circle monogram?  Or just LO's initials?  I am kind of figuring anything we monogram (my mom quilts/embroiders and goes a little nuts sometimes) would just be his regular initial monogram anyway.  Are circle monograms really big for boys?

This. I happen to love monogrammed stuff so it I was feeling iffy about the middle name I might change it because of this. If you love the name then I wouldn't sweat it at all.

  • OK, I totally get this because I'm really big on monograms--picturing DD's monogram actually contributed to our middle name choice for her.  In her case, I'm not crazy about her straight monogram, but her circle monogram is really pretty and that's what she has on everything.

In your case I would avoid a straight font with R in the middle but I think that TRD is fine for a circle or diamond monogram because I tend to see those as one image as opposed to individual letters.  And you can always do his monogram as three letters of the same size, first/middle/last, instead of the larger last initial in the middle.  I actually like that style of monogramming a lot for boys.

So, yeah.  I think it's just fine!

  • My DS is 4.5 and I've never even thought about a circle monogram for him. It's never been on my radar for either kid (I also have a 2 yo DD).  We aren't big monogram people, however. That being said, I honestly wouldn't worry much. Unless you are going to send him to elementary school wearing circle monograms each day, it's no big deal. No one is going to question/mock an infant/toddler for a cute monogrammed outfit, no matter what the initials.

Well then, I think TRD is perfectly acceptable!  Big Smile

  • This is not something I would be concerned with. I don't think this should matter but if it does to you I would start looking for another name.
  • This is totally something I would think of.  I think it's ok though b/c it helped me weed out a bunch of names.

One girl name I liked would have given her the initials NGR which I didn't like.  I posted here and on nameberry and most of the replies I got said it wasn't a big deal, but I knew I'd always think of it if I used those initials.  So we went with NLR instead.  :-)

  • I'm in the South where everything is monogrammed, and I have never seen a boy's or men's item monogrammed in the "circle" monogram way where the last name initial is larger and in the middle. Items for males are almost always straight across with the initials in order. Cute personalized stuff for boys tends to have their first name, not their monogram, and items for adults are the normal initials going straight across.

I wouldn't worry about it at all.
