s/o babyproofing... help me with our fireplace (PIP)

This is our fireplace, minus the ottoman.  I'd like to keep the ottoman across the room in front of our couch so we can actually put our feet up on it!  I'm having trouble figuring out a good way to babyproof the fireplace.  We can't do anything permanent since we are renting.

I thought about a baby gate but there's nowhere to attach it.  It's an apartment, so the living room isn't really big enough for a play yard.  Anybody have any ideas?

BTW, this picture was obviously taken pre-baby, the apartment hasn't been this clean since!!

  • have you thought about putting your TV console infront of it?  Would that be possible or a fire hazard??  I'm suddenly glad we don't have a fireplace!
  • We bought one of those big octagon shaped gates that make a huge enclosed space and we separated it into pieces.  We have an open concept downstairs so we use three of the gates at each side of the living room to block it off from the other rooms. Then we too the remaining two pieces and put them in a v to block off our fireplace.  LO still has to be watched around them because he could pull the gates over but it is at least a barrier! But if you get one of those pens and are able to use three or four pieces together they are pretty sturdy.

  • DH and I were just talking about this. We very much use our fireplace in the winter so putting something infront of it such as a tv or ottoman won't work - I need ideas too!

    that is a great idea!
  • You could put some cardboard over the opening.  There are some double sided adhesive tapes that could be used without ruining the tile.

  • What about a fireplace screen... Maybe something like this? (sorry can't make it clicky- on my phone) https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000X4SWAS/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1344221830&sr=8-1 Or would that pose new hazards on it's own?

Just gotta say LOVE your siggy. He looks like such a little man!

Oh and I may try the cardboard thing OP mentioned, may look funny but oh well.

  • We actually moved our coffee table in front of our fireplace. It covers the tile on the floor and the fireplace opening. We then put toys on the bottom as storage. It's nice because now we have more floor space and we don't worry so much about the kids running into the table.

  • Why not just leave it, and make sure to just tell your LO no if they go near it or touch it?

We have a brick fireplace with a working wood stove insert and we have not done anything to it. In fact we still use it every fall and winter. DS2 just started crawling towards it and we just stop him in his tracks and tell him no. With DS1 he has never had a problem with it, and its right in the middle of our living room which is his main play room too.

You would be surprised how quick kids can learn what is safe and what is not.

  • Can you not get a pressure mounted baby gate and actually put it inside the fireplace? The fireplace looks large enough that a traditional baby gate would fit inside it with the inner walls of the fire place being what would provide the sides.
