Yes, another contraction ?

Ok, FTM here... I have no idea what is going on in my body right now.  I have no idea what real contractions feel like, but for about the last hour and half to two hours, I have felt horrible!  I have had really bad cramping and where I can feel the baby, it is hard as a rock!  Then, it seems to get softer and less painful for a little bit.  It has been pretty constant, so not really timeable.  It doesn't last for very long, maybe 15-30 seconds, but it starts to get hard and crampy again within a couple of mintues.

I have been drinking lots of water and trying to change positions, but nothing is really helping.  So, does this sound pretty normal?  I don't feel like I am actually going into labor, but I also don't want to down play it all so much that I ignore something that I should be calling the dr for.  I am trying to stay calm and not be an alarmist, but like I said, I don't want to not call the doctor if I should be more concerned... thoughts?

Re: Yes, another contraction ?

  • I posted the same thing the other day.  The consensus was that it's pretty normal, to call the dr if they start lasting 1 minute every 5 minutes for 1 hour, and that if it made me feel better to call the dr.

I'm like you...I don't want to be THAT girl that calls the doctor over something that is normal...or gas...but I  found that using the restroom and then taking a nice long shower made the contractions slow down for a bit.   That was a couple of days ago, and I still have no baby, so I guess it was nothing to worry about.  :-)     HTH!

  • Try getting up and walking around. If they stop you should be good, but if they continue through your change in movement & position I would most definitely call! Honestly, at this stage in the game, you are NOT that girl! Those are contractions for sure, how bad is the pain that comes with them? Does it stop you in your tracks? Do you have a hard time talking through them? Back pain? These are also things that you will want to look for in "real labor" Some women never even get "real" contractions. If they continue after walking around I would call.

  • The advice of my doula is to do anything and everything you can to get your discomfort to go away. Hot bath or shower, massage, rest, drink plenty of water, etc. etc. and if you can't get things to slow down after a few hours or things seem to be intensifying then definitely give a call.

  • Since you are already 35 weeks I would go with the other ladies saying 5 minutes apart, lasting a minute for one hour, then it is time to call and go in.  My Dr told me after 34 weeks he wouldn't stop labor, but before 34 weeks if I have 4 contractions in one hour I need to call him, whether I think they are real of BH.  If it makes you feel better call the Dr for sure, that is what he is here for, and what you are paying him for after all. :-)

  • It's hard to tell if they are meeting the 5-1-1 theory because it's just been pretty constant... they are definitely not lasting for one minute, but coming very close together.  I took a little nap for about 45 minutes and felt a little better, but as soon as I got up again, I started feeling crappy.  Nothing has increased in intenisty or pain, so I am guess I am just having BH and it's a false alarm.  It does make me outta breath tho and is pretty uncomfortable!  I think as of now, I'm gonna see how I feel the rest of the night and maybe call my doctor in the am depending on how I feel.  My dr also told me that at this point, they are not going to stop labor, but I'd like to keep my little guy in the oven for a couple more weeks!  I guess that's what this next month is going to be like... am I really going into labor or not???  Good times!
