Today's a baby story.

Did anyone else watch the last episode of a baby story? The one with the water birth? Was it just me or were there waaaay to many people there with her? There were at leash 10 people following her around. Is that normal for that type of birth?

  • Haha! I just watched it too! Totally agree. That was a lot of people to squeeze into a small bathroom.

  • I didn't see today's, but I've noticed that everytime they've shown a water birth. No privacy!

People always say "get used to it" or "privacy goes out the window when you're in labor" but I didn't have that experience. Yes, there were a few people who saw me down there, but the only time there was even a small (3 or 4 people) group of people watching me was when I was pushing. I felt like a had a ton of privacy before and after that portion.

  • There were at least 10 ppl in there. Everyone seemed to have their hands on her. And when the midwife checked her progress they all including about 10 women and 3 men stood there and watched. She was completely naked no draping or covering just all out there. The guys were snapping pics. I mean I know they say no privacy but holy cow.

  • OMG YES! I was like uhh..is this a birth or a performance? And then she was walking around the birthing center )or whatever it was) with her robe open and boobs flying everywhere.

I know they say that you have to let go of your modesty when giving birth but I think that's taking it to the extreme...

  • Yes!! Were they all family members? Or friends? Or what? I can't imagine being like, "Hi friends, would you like to get up close and personal with my vajayjay and come watch my waterbirth? It will be so magical, and you won't want to throw up everywhere at all!"

Yeah, agree. I'll most definitely be wearing at least a bra, but that's me.

  • I didn't see it, but no not all water births are a performance! My bestie had 2 MWs and her hubby at her birth. It was quiet and peaceful- one MW snapped a few pics, but my friend asked her to before hand. I know bc she let me watch her birth video :) I'm planning a home water birth for this baby and there will only be Dh, 2MWs, and me. Possibly Ds... I still have to figure that out!

  • I've never heard of that many people at a birth other than at a teaching hospital!!! Holy crap. 0_o I cannot imagine. I think for me it will be just a doula, the doc at the end or midwife, and that's it.

A gf of mine was telling me her birth story (does that happen a lot?) and she said that she went to a teaching hospital for her and four students had to check her ever hour, plus the actual resident doctor. When baby was moving lower in the birth canal, each one came in at a different time and she said she could FEEL them pushing her head back in to check her dilation and placement. OMG. I would've kicked a kid in the head. Learning or not.

  • I think those who consent to have their labors and births broadcast on TV or internet are not too concerned (or worry) about privacy.

  • Yesssss I was watching that going GET OUT OF THERE SHE'S HAVING A BABY.  And what was with the little kid???  That's at least the second episode I've seen that involved a small child being in and out of the room, what is with that?!  Maybe I don't get it because this is my first kid, but I would think that would be traumatic?

Yeah, I don't think that show is the best basis for "reality."  I doubt there is any real correlation between having a water birth and big audience.  I'll never understand having a ton of people around, regardless of the type of birth.  I will say that at the birthing center, it was me, DH and a midwife.  Later there were more midwives but that's because I was having issues.  Once we transferred to the hosptial, there were WAY more people around but I didn't give a shiitBig Smile
