What dr advice have you ignored?

In general, I follow the dr's advice because he/she went to school for this stuff. But my first doctor said no tuna (not even chunk light once a week) and I'm really picky so I've been eating it anyway.

My new dr said not to worry about spinning babies exercises yet but I'm starting to feel like I might ignore that advice because I'm worried about running out of space/time for LO to move.

Anyway, what advice have you ignored? If your dr said, "Don't worry about it" would you do simple things like spinning babies inversions?

  • My doc said when I work out, it can/should get my h.r. up to at least 140-145. That hasn't happened. I go on my daily walks, and thats about as intense as I'll get until this baby comes out.

  • I've been advised loads of stuff I ignore. Right now, the one I regret is buying a maternity bra. I'm free balling it as much as I can because my regular ones feel like S&M bondage. Maybe later I'll enjoy a little bondage but not right now.

  • I had one of my OB's tell me to make sure all my red meat is cooked well done. That's not going to happen.  I may ask for it medium instead of medium rare, but that's as done as I'm willing to eat it.  I haven't died yet, and so far my child doesn't look like it has 3 eyes.

  • My doctor said not to get my heartrate up above 140 but I totally break that rule.  He is an older man and the new studies have shown that you can keep doing things as long as you did them pre-pregnancy.  My heartrate gets up to 140 just walking up the stairs in our house.......I need more cardio than that! :)
  • I've eaten lunchmeat without heating it up, and I eat soft cheese. It's all pasteurized so I figure I'm not putting the baby at risk.

I avoid all caffeine, even though docs told me it was fine to have 1-2 cups a day.

  • I don't follow her advice about how limited I'm supposed to be with my irritable uterus. I *want* to, but unless someone steps up to pay for child care until this baby is born, I just don't see it happening. There is only one of me from 8am-5pm and that is most of the time DS is awake. What am I supposed to besides pick him up, change his diaper, make him food, etc etc etc?? I do wonder if too much activity is why it is getting so much easier to cause the contraction or for it to become painful, but I just don't have much of a choice.

As far as the spinning babies stuff goes, I don't see why you should wait. It isn't like it would hurt you and at 35 weeks I'd be stressing it as well. I think my doctor was going to start having me do stuff at 34 weeks if it was a problem (I'm hyper-aware of breech since DS was), but I would have likely started at 32 weeks.

Thanks. That's super helpful; you always have good insight. The dr said "don't worry" but I've been worrying, and I think I'll feel better to at least be attempting something that could help.

  • I've eaten entirely too many hot dogs this pregnancy.  at least DH and I buy the
natural casing ones, that makes it better, right?

the doctor told me to only gain 20 pounds this pregnancy, I think I'm up to 15 already.

I exercise regularly and don't think I've ever even told my doctor that I do.

10 lbs throughout the entire pregnancy? Is that even possible?

My Dr. said the same and I just about fell on the floor...I'm up about 25ish now and I'm ok with this...I worked it off last year and I'll work it off again! I'm enjoying being pregnant and so it my baby...LO gets well fed! ;P Btw they have not said 1 thing about my weight since then!

  • My Dr told me it is important to stretch daily.  It wouls help with backaches and other stuff later in pregnancy...I haven't done it at all.  Maybe if I had I would have a pulling sensation in my lower back every time I leaned over...hmm
  • Oh so many things-  I've ignored the kick counts in both pregnancies, I was told not to gain more than 20 lbs but I am at 19 and still have almost 4 weeks to go so that is out the window, I eat tuna once in a while, I eat nuts once in a while, I have taken warm baths when my back pain is insane, I have had LARGE bowls of sugary cereals for breakfast and snacks, I drink sweet tea, we've had sex with me on my back a couple of times in both pregnancies, and the list goes on!

I think as long as you generally eat healthy, exercise in moderation, keep hydrated, and dont consume medications you shouldnt the baby will turn out just fine.

I think docs give so many precautionary lectures because without them some women go to extremes which obviously negatively impact their children. Some women you tell them they can have 6 oz of coffee and they will only have 6 oz of coffee. Some you tell them 6 oz of coffee and they drink 6 cups of sugar and caffeine filled coffee.

Kick counts. If I try to do them, I don't feel her.

I know she moves around in there a lot throughout the day at various times, sometimes more than others and some days she is crazy and other days she's not. If I don't feel her as much as normal, I focus on them and make sure she moves 5x in an hour. I'm not recording them like they told me I should: 10x in 3 hours at the same time everyday. My life isn't that predictable that I can set aside 3 hours everyday where I can lay down on my left side and count.

This probably should have been my FFFC.

I'm with you. I have to fill out my little kick count cards... 1 hour, twice a day, on my left side, after a meal.

That's not practical and not really happening. If I'm sitting upright, not after a meal, and he kicks me 12 times in 30 minutes, I'm not about to go lie down for an hour (which inevitably causes me to fall asleep which sorta defeats the purpose).

  • This is such a no-no but I've been cleaning litter boxes this whole time. My husband works nights 10 hours a day 5 days a week. He forgets and then it starts to stink so I just started doing it again. Both of my cats are indoor, they never go out, and I just dump it all out and put new litter in, I don't scoop. Everything is fine, baby is healthy and normal...I always tell my girlfriends I'm going to pregnant lady jail.

  • Aside from skipping my daily glass of wine and being more diligent about taking a daily vitamin, I haven't changed my daily routine at all for this pregnancy.  I'm sure there are lots of no-nos that I've been doing, but I honestly don't care.  I think OBs tend to be way overly cautious with pregnant women.

I have a don't ask, don't tell policy with my midwives and OBs.  As long as I feel well, baby is moving and growing, and my care providers aren't concerned about anything, I consider it good.

I hate ham, but I will eat it when it's rolled with pickles and cream cheese. YUM. My husband has always called those things a pregnancy roll up, but I've loved them way before getting pregnant.

Mmmmm yeah we call them pregnant pickles around here but same thing are they are super yummy! I was some right now! Thanks ladies! Must go to the store and buy stuff for them. Lol.

Yeah, I guess because I started overweight, he wanted to keep it down.  I never had ms for either of my pg, all I ever wanted to do was eat, so this was definitely not happening.

  • Definitely not doing the kick counts.  But, all in all my doctor was pretty laid back.  I did gain a bit more weight than he would have liked though.  I am up 28 and he didn't want me to gain more than 25.  Oops.

My doctor told me the same thing (my BMI is in the obese range pre-pregnancy). Um, I just hit 10 lbs. at my 34 week appointment and I'm so hungry all the time now, there is no way I'm going to go the last month without gaining any weight. Unless you have really bad morning sickness in the first trimester and lose a lot of weight, it is really hard to not gain more than 10 lbs. The weight of the baby, uterus, placenta, amniotic fluid, and increased blood volume at term are more than 10 lbs. and that doesn't even count any swelling or increased breast size.

I'm at 7 right now, so yes it's possible.  Not easy though.

  • Kick counts for sure! They stress me out and he has never followed them. In fact if I try them I'm pretty sure he knows and won't move. So nope nope! I also enjoy soda... not a WHOLE lot.. but a decent amount.
