MIL and Car Seats

So, my MIL is quitting her job this coming week to finish up her masters quicker. So she wants to take DD once a week and sometimes over night to get time with her. DD isn't blood related so she wants to create a bond I guess. It is fine for me. I get 1 day a week to clean, relax, run errands, ect. Awesome.

Well, she came over last night and said she had gotten DD a car seat for her car. She asked if I wanted to see it. She got DD a car seat from Good Will that expired 3 years ago and she wanted to make a cover for it. Needless to say she got a tiny car seat safety course. She was cool with it and will return the seat. We will be giving her one of ours since we are upgrading to better forward facing seats.

Speaking of which. I think we are going to get the Diono Radian RXT. Since they fit 3 across and have the features we like. Anyone have any feedback on this seat?

Re: MIL and Car Seats

  • Is Good Will even allowed to sell that?

I'm glad you said something.  I was afraid the post was going to end, "Should I confront her about it?"  A+ to you!

  • That is a pretty cute story actually. Wouldn't have been if she hadn't been so compliant though. I'm actually kinda shocked that Goodwill resold the seat. I tried to donate a doorway jumper and they wouldn't take it.

That was my question too. I didn't think they could.

Yeah. Ours is ghetto. So who knows. Luckily she only paid 8$ for it. She will just get one of our Graco My Rides when we upgrade.

  • Please ask her not to return it, on the off chance that they might put it back out for sale. It could end up in the hands of someone else who doesn't have you to prevent them from using it.

She should dump it. And cut the straps first, just to be sure no one can try to use it.

I did suggest that. However, I have no control over what she does.

  • I think it's pretty great that she was so accepting about not using the carseat she bought.

It's awful that Goodwill was actually selling an expired carseat though.

Does it make me a crazy cake if I will buy old, I mean 80s-90s old, carseats from garage sales for .75 cents just to destroy it?

Take those suckers in to Babies R Us when they do their trade-in events!

I hunt garage sales for that stuff to buy and use at BRU when they have the trade in.

This is good advice. I have 2 carseats, 2 bases, and a stroller fog the next one. I got baby crap to buy.

  • Glad to hear your MIL listened! It's illegal for goodwill to sell that, so if she returns it I would make sure she tells them that. Most likely it's older people who have no idea about carseats running the show there and they didn't think to look. I would keep it and buy your new seat at the BRU trade in event so you get a discount on your new seat and it gets that one off the streets.

As far as the radian, that is pretty much my favorite seat. It can be tricky to install in certain cars, especially RF, but it's nice and slim, has high height and weight limits and once you get used to installing it it's not bad. I also love the steel frame, just makes me feel like it's more substantial.
