Ok so I am a FTM and I was reading in one of the preggo books about babies and what it should feel like when you poke at the belly. I fewel movement in the upper side of the belly is this feet or head? By what time should the baby be upside down. I think he might be oblique but that is just from going off what the book (which will turn you into a hypocondriach!) says. Any thoughts? could he be breached or am I just paranoid? I'm only 34 weeks is there still time for him to get into the correct position?
Re: Breached?
I had no idea what position my babies have been in until they tell me at an u/s. I can't tell a butt from a head.
They will start to worry about a breech baby around 37 weeks. You still have some time.
The baby can turn into head-down position at any time. My doctor prefers that they do so before 37 weeks because they start to run out of room, so if the baby hasn't turned at 37 weeks they try to turn them manually.
Spinningbabies.com has good instructions on how to figure out what position your baby is in, but it's much easier to just ask your doctor to check at your next visit. My doctor did a brief ultrasound to verify that the baby was head-down at my 34 week visit, because it had been breech up until then.
If you're worried, go ahead and see a chiropractor. You don't have to wait until the OB / midwife says that baby is in a bad position to try to do something about it - chiropractic care earlier in the pregnancy is actually the better way to get baby in an optimal position. You're not too late! 32-34 weeks is a great time to start. They won't turn the baby or force anything to happen, they just loosen ligaments and help get the pelvis in optimal positioning, which then allows baby to turn and get into position on it's own. I'd find someone certified in the Webster technique; the technique is used for breech babies, but they can also just use the technique as a prevention for breech (by getting the pelvis in optimal position).
Spinning babies is also good, but I appreciate the expertise offered by a chiropractor.
For what it's worth, I have a hard time feeling if baby is head down or head up sometimes. Usually it's easy to tell big kicks of the feet vs. flutters of the hand, but sometimes it's hard to tell. (this baby, just like my first, likes to hang out w/ his/her feet in my right rib cage, mostly on a diagonal - so not quite head down). My issue is that this baby is constantly sunny-side up and so I'm trying to get my pelvis realigned so that he/she can flip around more easily.
My point is that the dr. (and everyone online) will say "it doesn't matter until 37+ weeks) but at that point, baby has a harder time turning b/c of how big they are. Not that this is ALWAYS the case - but it can be the case. So it's better to fix any issues that might cause baby to have a hard time getting into position earlier in the pregnancy rather than at the last minute before they want to do a version or c-section.
Ditto Spinningbabies.com--they have a section on belly mapping which can help you figure out baby's position.
Babies can flip at any time--my doula actually had her baby flip twice while she was in labor.

It's actually BREECH, not breach or breached.
CRAFTY ME
my read shelf:
This baby is breech (or was at my last u/s). Your OB should be able to tell by now when he/she feels your stomach. My OB said not to stress out because the baby doesn't get "stuck" until after 34 weeks. He ordered another u/s for me next month, but I have other complications so there are few different things he wants to check on.
