Not sure how to handle a doggy situation with DD... :(

She sent me a text yesterday that her dog, Daisy had broken her back again. (She is a sweet little wiener dog) She said they probably werent going to do the surgery again because it's very expensive & probably wouldn't work. So this morning she called hysterical because they were taking Daisy to put her down. I am just heart broken for her. All I could do was tell her how sorry I was & that Daisy was in a lot of pain. I feel like I should be doing more, but I don't know what.

  • aww man that sucks. The best advice I can give you is just be there for her, I know you will be, but I really do not know what else to say.

  • Aww that is so sad--sorry! Ditto PP--just be there for her! Not much else you can do, I think!

  • I'm so sorry. I just lost my dog and there isn't much you can do. Just hold her when you have her. Poor baby

  • I have a dauschund too.. my biggest fear is the back situation.  so sad.  sorry for your DD.

A few weeks after our family pet died we made a little photo collage of his pictures.  perhaps you and DD can do this together as part of the healing process?

This is the second time it's happened. Last time, they did the surgery & she was in a "wheelchair" for a while. The vet said that even if they did the surgery again, it was likely not to "hold" and they could face the same problem again. She had been on pain pills since Monday and this morning it was just too much, so they made the decision to put her down so she wouldn't be suffering anymore.

I like the idea of a picture collage. I think we will do that this weekend.

  • Thank you ladies. I never really grew up with a dog (or pet) so this is all new to me. We have a pup at our house & I am sure I would be devastated if something happened to him, but to see my daughter so heartbroken is killing me. She held her all the way to the vet & home so they could bury her. She said she feels ok because she knows this was the right thing to do for Daisy.
  • So sorry!  I can't even imagine how much of a wreck I will be when my dog dies.  I feel for your daughter Sad

  • Ditto what everyone else has said, be there for her, make a photo collage, or a photo book using shutterfly or something. If you have enough pictures you could kind of make it into a storybook about how great a life she had, and some fun memories that they had together.

Now, I know that I'm horribly emotional right now, and a HUGE dog lover, but this made me cry for DD and Daisy. :(

ditto.  What a sad situation. How old is DD again? I'm not sure what would be age appropriate...

I will say, that this is one of the things H and I are most dreading having our two pups and now a baby on the way.  (Yeah, we've thought/discussed it already.)  ugh. I'm sorry :(

she just turned 12. She has had daisy ...well, Christmas would be 5 years.
  • Our vet did a paw print for us when we lost our last dog and we baked it and will hang it on the tree.  Maybe ask her if they gave her anything at the vet.

  • I'm so sorry!!  I'm dreading the day we lose one of our pets and have to explain it to DS.

    ((hugs)) to you both.

  • Thank you all, I think I will send a text to her step mom & let her know about doing paw prints. She is all scrapbooky & crafty, so I am sure she could find a nice way to do it. I think it would be cute to have that in the middle of a picture collage?
  • No advice, but I'm sorry for her loss. :(
