Just curious ... are any of your LOs still "babbling," meaning vocalizing a lot without forming actual words?
DS has added a ton of new words in the past month or so, but he still babbles at length while he tends to only use real words when prompted (like when we ask him what he wants).
Just wondering if this is normal. We're on the fence about doing a speech eval next month, based on our pedi's recomendation.
Re: Babbling?
My kid babbles constantly.
We'll get: "Mama? Goblelalalblababamanamenaeatkneaklgn" Like she's trying to tell me something desperately, but doesn't have the words and then looks at me like I'm nuts because I don't go do whatever it is she wanted me to do.
She has a bunch of real words, but they are dead useful ones like "bug" and "doggeh." So she only uses them in context and will use others when prompted to name her body parts and such.

DD babbles a lot still. She is adding more words though, finally. The pedi doesn't seem to worried about her though since DH didn't talk until after he was 2.
I was talking to my OB the other day and she said her DD didn't start walking and talking until she was after 18 months, then it was like a switch went off. Her DD's pedi also wanted her to take her to speak therapy. She said she finally gave in and did it for like 3 months and it never made a difference (that was when she was just after a year old. This gave me hope that DD is just being stubborn too.

Thanks, ladies!
For clarity's sake, I wanted to clarify that the speech eval was not rec'd due to him babbling but rather for the lack of word combinations. What the pedi said was that if he wasn't using two-word phrases by 20 months we could consider an eval, if we wanted one. She gave us a script but wasn't pushy about it at all, so I think it's up to us to decide. I keep hoping he's going to start busting out the phrases in the next couple weeks, so we don't have to make a decision!
This is O to exactly, has words but babbles a ton.
My son babbles a ton, too. He doesn't have a lot of words though either - about ten. No two word combination either.
Our pedi doesn't worry about speech until two as long as they have some words, but we just recently got an evaluation from EI and he is going to be starting speech therapy soon.
Hazel still babbles, but only while pretending to talk on the phone. She will take my phone or a toy phone and say " hewo, blagablegahbu, bye bye" and hang up the phone. I think she's just being silly and mimicking my phone conversations. I'm pretty sure some level of babbling is still normal at this age.
Yes, DS spends lots of time "talking on the phone." It's funny because even thought he's not saying anything, his tone rises and falls like he is.
we totally have that. DS uses words here and there but most of the time he "talks" with nonsense. He gesticulates, uses wonderful intonation, points, etc, but it's not English he's speaking! haha
I doubt you need to do an eval but I guess it depends on how many words your DS has at all. Like 5 or less? Or more like 25+?
I don't think DD is any where near using two word phrases. Her vocabulary is pretty limited to but it's getting better.
I think we're at around 25 right now. (Although we were at <10 when we saw the pedi at 18 months). Most of them he doesn't use regularly, but will repeat after us if we say them.
This is us exactly. And if I say "what?" after that jibberish, she does more babbling, only quieter, like she thinks she's done something wrong.
H does have a lot of real words - well over 100 - that she uses quite a bit, but she definitely babbles a lot when she's playing.
I saw later down your post about your real concern being no 2 word phrases. I think DS maybe once put two words together. So I would say he does not do this either and I think many/most kids this age have not.
