Corner Changing Tables?

Does anyone have any experience with these?  I'm looking at changing table options that will save space and this is one of the things I'm considering.  I know everyone says they just change the baby wherever but we're going to go with a changing table of some kind for the grandparent's sake.  The corner ones seem like they take up a little less room but I'm just envisioning standing at the receiving end of a poop explosion! (The baby's bottom faces you for those of you who haven't seen these.)

Also, for those of you that do the dresser/changing combo.  Are those stable?  (newbie question I know) but my I mentioned putting a changing pad on top of a dresser to my mom and she seemed to think the baby would fall off.  (I don't buy that at all) but can someone explain that to me?  I saw one where you drill a little tray into the top but it seems kind of stupid to drill holes in something that I would want to use as a dresser later...

I feel like such a novice with all of this baby gear stuff.

I gave up on the dedicated change table.  DS outgrew it so fast and kept hitting his head or his legs on the edges hard enough to leave bruises.  We went with the change pad on the bed for a while, but now we have the pad on the dresser.  Honestly?  The dresser is absolutely the most convenient.  We got some rubber shelf liner stuff to put under the contoured change pad so nothing moves around.  It is every bit as good as the dedicated change table, better to my mind.  DS can play alligator (rolling around) and he is still contained by the contour of the change pad, while the shelf liner keeps the pad from moving.  Plus it means that later the dresser is just that, his dresser.

  • I'm definitely a fan of having a changing table.  I know not everyone is, but for me, I need a designated spot and having one helped DS once he got to the stage where he didn't want to cooperate with changes.  Also, I'd rather change him on a table because it's the right height for me, rather than bending over a bed or something.  You'll change A LOT of diapers :)

As far as the corner changing table, I've never seen one so I can't really comment on that.  I wouldn't worry about poop coming at you though.  That doesn't really happen IME.  I do prefer changing DS from the side, but maybe that's just because it's what I'm accustomed to at this point more than anything.

I have a regular changing table, but I have used the ones that are basically the top of a dresser at friend's/family's houses and they're definitely stable.  First, the pad is kind of... concave (does that make sense?).  It's not completely flat, so baby can't just roll off exactly.  And I've never experienced the pad moving.  Maybe it's grippy on the bottom or something?  They seem pretty popular though so I would assume there's not a safety issue.

Does your mom think the pad itself would fall off, or just baby?  It's not like you can leave them up there by themselves anyway :)

  • The corner one seems awkward for changing clothes, which is usually done at the same time/in the same place as diaper changing. I am going with a dresser top kit, the kind that has a wooden edge to keep the cushion in place.

  • Yeah, I keep thinking the corner table looks like a good idea at the time but in reality is really unpractical.  I didn't think of a sticky pad under the changing pad, that's a good idea.  I have no idea what my mom is thinking.  It may be that she's just never seen that set up before.  But height will probably be the biggest issue for her as far as changing and since she will be a primary caregiver when I go back to work I'm trying to be open minded on this one.  I guess I just won't know what we all prefer until the baby gets here!

  • I haven't even seen a corner table so I don't know about that, but I stand on the narrow end of ours (so in front of LO's feet, in the receiving end of a poop explosion) and have never had any poop end anywhere near me (I had to make a quick jump to the side to avoid the pee fountain a few times the first 2-3 months though)

Anyhow to me is WAY more confortable to have DS in front of me, instead that horizontaly, when I have to change his diaper and especially when I have to change his clothes, mostly now that he's bigger and heavier
