structure for RN resume

DH just got his RN license this week, and now we have the task of updating his resume.

For those nurses out there (or those that are good with resumes), are there any good structures out there for resumes specific to the nursing field? Just trying to see what the general format is out there, or if something is different for a more clinical approach.

Yay, I'm so excited that he has his license! He still has to finish his masters, but we're so close!

Re: structure for RN resume

  • Congrats to you guys! I've always followed a traditional resume format and have never had issues.

    1. Name, credentials, contact info as header

    2. Statement of intent

    3. Education

    4. Experience (maybe since he is a new grad, list where he had his rotations, especially his practicum

    5. Awards/honors

    6. Civic involvement/community service

I am definitely not an HR expert so maybe one of those girls could help.

  • Thanks!

We're fortunate that though he doesn't have nursing experience (beyond his clinical hours) he has been working as a phlebotomist for 5+ years, and worked as an EMT for several years before that. I'm hoping that it counts for something even though is first degree has nothing to do with nursing.

It will absolutely count as experience. He will be far more qualified than a typical new grad. Nursing was my second career (and degree) too and I know that having life experience is huge in the job of an RN.
