Help me organize my bedroom!

I know this has been asked, but...

So, my room is a freakin' disaster. Like, its embarrassing. There are clothes all over the place (all clean, just not put away. We live out of hampers), some random toys of E's, and just general junk. I don't even know where to start. Its going to take me some time to really break myself into the habit of staying on top of organization, but I am ready to do it because I am just so over living like this. I am able to keep E's room clean and organized, but my room...ugh. With the new baby coming, I just know I can't have my room like this anymore. I feel so lazy about it because we are never in there except for sleeping, but its not fair to DH to have to deal with my mess (some of it is his too, but I have to own it that its mostly me.) I want our room to be a place we can hang out in, especially after Asher makes his entrance.

Anyway, sorry about the novel, I just feel really crappy about my messiness and needed to get this out. So, can you help?

Tips for getting rid of old clothes? Tips for re-organizing a whole bedroom? Tips for keeping the room organized? Best place to start?

Your clean clothes need to be put away as soon as they are folded.

Go through last seasons stuff and donate whatever didn't fit, you didn't like, or didn't wear.

If you have too many clothes for everything to fit, but wear it all, get those big bins and put stuff in there.  I have a big bin of winter stuff and will change it out with summer once fall/winter comes.

Get a bin in your room to put toys.

  • I haven't reorganized my room yet, but I have done most of the house room by room. I find it's less intimidating ( and therefore, more likely to get done) if I focus on one aspect of the room at a time. I also use hampers and boxes to separate things. I go through everything. I have a keep pile, a goodwill donation box, a trash box and a sell box. I don't keep things unless we can use them in the near future ( except baby things). I try to use the organizational things we already have before I go shopping to save money. I also try to be realistic about where things will go and how they will be used. I think things are more likely to get put away that way.  Good luck!

  • Definitely focus on one thing at a time. I would start with clothes. I would take all of them out and go through it, make a donation pile and a trash pile and whatever you want to keep, put it away as you go along. We don't keep any toys in our room, they all stay in DSs room, or in the toybox in the living room. Give yourself a week or so (I don't know how much time you have?) and do a little every day. That way its not sp overwhelming. Upkeep is the easy part. As soon as laundry is done, put it away. Instead of setting random things down, put them where they belong, then they can't pile up. It's easy to say oh, I'll get this later, but before you know it, its a heaping pile. You avoid having to really clean/organize by keeping up with it IMO. Good luck, once its done you will feel so great about it!

  • Thanks ladies! I have a lot of time before baby, just really tired of it and want it done haha. I think I will go through my clothes first. I need to just grow a pair and get rid of stuff, I tend to pull the "Oh, I'll totally wear this!" but then I never do. As for toys, there isn't much, its just random crap. I'm going to do clothes and old papers/junk/any trash today, then do more throughout the week. Thanks for the help! I am so ready to have a nice, clean room.

  • I just made myself a weekly cleaning checklist for the whole house, so hopefully that will keep me on track with maintaining the whole place. I really wish my parents had helped me build better organization habits, but they were both sorta packrats too, I guess. I hope to teach E and A better skills for picking up after themselves.

  • I think one of my least favorite things to do is put up clean, folded clothes into a dresser.  The bad thing about it is, that DH tends to do laundry on my weekends that I work.  So, I come Saturday morning and put away the laundry he did Friday night, then come home Sunday morning, and have more laundry from Saturday night.  It's a vicious cycle and it drives me batty!

Other than that, our room is pretty clean.  I am a little weird when it comes to my house.  It is driving me nuts that I am at work and there are still boxes around that are not packed!
