So, I realize that I need to start getting Ty used to using utensils... I'm having a hard time finding (in-store at least) forks that aren't metal. I started poking around online this morning and have found a few, but what do your LOs use, and how long did it take them to get the hang of it, have they poked their eyes (a common fear of mine), etc?
TIA!
Re: What utensils does LO use?
She's getting pretty good with a spoon. She still makes a huge mess but can actually get food from the bowl to her mouth without me preloading it now.
we use a metal fork and haven't had a problem. Even if she snags herself in the eye, it's not enough force to cause any serious damage. We have this set. https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12582332 but I have often wondered why there is a knife included, haha! She LOVES forks (both hers or mine), and if she's acting finicky about eating I bust it out because she will eat almost anything off of a fork.
fwiw, in the infant room at our daycare (where they stay until 18 months-ish) they don't even introduce forks, and they thought I was crazy when I mentioned it. So if you aren't ready, I don't think there is a big rush on those.
He likes the Take n Toss spoons, he gets frustrated with forks though because he only wants to use a utensil for purees, and the puree falls right through the fork.
Oh, as for how he's doing with it, he spent a few weeks just sticking the spoon in the bowl while I fed him, and then he started putting it in his mouth - but always upside down. Some stickier stuff would stay on there, so was actually starting to feed himself, although it made a huge mess. He's just now starting to put the spoon in right side up. I'd say about a month after starting to use it.
I'm ready to introduce them, but I want to use softer ones like plastic, and I've had a hard time finding them in-store. I hadn't thought about how it's not like our LOs are using them with such force, so the likelihood of him hurting himself is slim! He LOVES to eat off of my fork though, so I think he's ready to try his own!
We use these forks and they are fine. https://www.amazon.com/Gerber-Graduates-Kiddy-Cutlery-Colors/dp/B002UXQRNE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343313522&sr=8-1&keywords=gerber+fork . No stabbed eyes/faces/mouth yet, though my LO tends to be pretty calm with his stuff and doesn't flail it around too much.
We have these spoons and we like them so far. They're pricey for spoons, but I had a coupon to a baby store and got them as part of a set with the Baby Bjorn plate. https://www.amazon.com/BABYBJ%C3%96RN-Spoon-Pack-Green-Yellow/dp/B000CSBPCW/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1343313670&sr=1-1&keywords=baby+bjorn+spoons
We have this stainless set that we got as a gift https://www.amazon.com/Oneida-Revere-6-Piece-Progress-Flatware/dp/B000NDQ3E6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343316532&sr=8-1&keywords=oneida+baby+flatware
He doesn't use the fork that much but so far no injuries! I don't think he could really hurt himself with it. He mostly likes to play with it right now since he sees us eating with a fork. We sometimes spear food with his fork and he'll eat it off there but he can't do it himself yet. I liked that this set came with a "baby" fork and child fork so he can use it for a long time. It seems like its good quality and I expect the pieces to last for a long time.
I just bought the parents choice brand of plastic spoons and forks from Walmart. They were less than $2 for a 10 pack and they are really sturdy. The forks are more like sporks which I like. I'd definitely recommend these ones!
We use the plastic Take and Toss ones, and they're just ok. It's hard to spear food with the plastic ones, and that is what Maya is trying to do now. She saw me using 2 hands to load up her fork, b/c the softer foods were just getting smashed, not speared, and now she will add the the fork load with her hands- cute but not productive since she puts it in her mouth upside down so anything not speared falls off before it gets in her mouth.
I've been meaning to get a metal one for her but I only remember at home- never when I'm out at stores that sell them.
We just bought these & the boys seem to like them. Sometimes they get it loaded themselves, but for now it's mainly just for practice.
I only started because he kept stealing mine. Get your own spoon, kid!
