Cloth Diapering

Prefold leaks

I've been trying to use prefolds with a PUL cover on my newborn (one week old, 8lb 8oz).  I've been having leaks the last day.  One was up at his waist, so I assume came out the top front of the diaper.  With the next, his butt was wet, and I'm not sure if that leak was out the legs or back.  I was using the preemie size prefolds, because they seemed to fit him better originally, but since he has grown 8oz in the last week, I went up to newborn size. Those seem to be fitting him better than they did when I tried them at one day old.  However, I then had another leak, on his front, right side.  That one I have no clue as to where it leaked from!  I'm at a loss as to what the problem is.  I made sure the prefold was tucked in to the cover, and I'm pretty sure the gussets were pulled out.  Any suggestions would be so appreciated!  I really want to use cloth, and we've already paid for a full month with this diaper service, so don't want my money to have gone to waste!

Re: Prefold leaks

  • I think you have to change your baby more often. That happens to me sometimes and its because i wait too long to change her OR she peed so much that one or 2nd time she peed that the prefold couldn't absorb more. She's two months now and I too felt frustrated when she was a newborn (and new to cloth diapering) when it would leak. Your baby is just eating more and peeing/ pooping more that diaper changes have to be made more frequent. You'll notice a (pee/poop) pattern with your baby and you'll know "ok baby its night time...you pee so much more at night so ill have to change you an extra time". I was gonna say your washing the prefolds wrong or they need to be stripped but since your using a diaper service they SHOULD be washing them and stripping them correctly. So I think your doing great mommy! Try more diaper changes especially when you notice your baby pees more or less and x time of the day!   :)
  • Make sure his little squirt gun is always in the down position when putting the prefold on, they tend to move when you pull up the prefold or adjust it to much. also are you using a snappy? I found when I first moved up a size to fold down the back instead of the front to get a more snug fit around the front and the squishy legs.
