Are spray tans and sunless tanning lotions safe?

Have any of you talked to your obgyn or dermatologist about whether or not spray tans and tanning lotions are safe? I have recently read news articles that say they cause cancer and birth defects, but my dermatologist said he hasn't seen anything to support that data. However, I don't know if he has done any real research. I am curious to know your thoughts.

  • I personally wouldn't use them pregnant or not...but I've become pretty crunchy when it come to what I use on my skin and such.

  • I'll probably spray tan my NB for their first photo shoot!

In all seriousness, I wouldn't do it pg.

  • Not sure about the safety factor, but Spray tans are a waste of $ IMHO. I had one for my wedding and it did not even out my tan lines and it rubbed off on my dress even though I specifically asked when I should come in in order for it not to do that (i think it was 4 days before) and followed all their instructions.

  • I read a similar article and they said its only spray tans that can get into your blood stream through breathing in the particles. My OB said the lotions are perfectly safe though.

  • Not sure about the spray tans, but I did ask my OB about the lotions and those are safe to use.
