This is a long and very confusing story but I wanted to share it with you ladies to get some insights from folks because right now I am completely confused. Here's the story:
May 18: Last period (normally my periods last 35 days)
June 7: Ovulate according to CM
June 12 - 22: Pregnancy symptoms including gas, bloating, etc.
June 22: BFP - faint but there
June 24: Stronger BFP (day of expected period)
June 30: BFN followed by a blood test showing HCG levels of 0 --- it's a chemical pregnancy (would have been 5 weeks pregnant)
July 10: Sonogram showing no fetal pole or fetal sac. I'm completely devastated by the loss of the child.
July 23: Go back to doctor to find out why there's been no bleeding or spotting still --- thinking it's a missed miscarriage. Vaginal sonography shows a 6 week fetal pole and a strong heartbeat. !!!!!!!! I should have been at 8 weeks and 3 days.
Ummm, so we're excited, elated, shocked, confused, and scared. What the heck happened? My doctor said that maybe it was "spontaneous ovulation" but TCOYF says that there's no such thing. So, I see three possibilities:
A. The original baby somehow survived a complete drop in HCG levels and the fetus is now 2 weeks behind where it should be. (This doesn't seem very likely.)
B. On the day I got the BFP, I ovulated again and the first baby died, but the second baby has lived on, meaning that the 6 week fetal pole is on track. (This is a VERY rare condition called superfetation --- meaning you get pregnant while you're already pregnant.) Again, this seems unlikely.
C. I had twins and one twin died and the other survived, which would account for the small size of the fetal pole.
Right now, we see it as a miracle because this doesn't seem to be scientifically possible. I buried my grandfather on the day that I first ovulated --- maybe his spirit was protecting this baby. Any thoughts? I more want to know whether I'm on track growth wise or not --- my ob/gyn didn't seem concerned at all by the size, so that's good news but, of course, I'm freaking out and want to make sure that all will be well with my unexpected miracle.
Re: Well, that wasn't expected - a fertility puzzle
The day the Bump died - Jasper is wise
I am sorry for your loss, but congratulations on your miracle.
You can ovulate while you still have HCG in your system. If you were using sensitive pregnancy tests then it may have been detecting a very low level of HCG. It may have been enough HCG to show on a pregnancy test, but not enough to prevent ovulation. It is very strange that you didn't have any bleeding in between, though.
I agree with PP, sometime between the 24th and 30th. A strong heartbeat is always a great sign
