considering home birth / nurse midwife research

yes, I am one of those people that love to research...and I want to have more info before we even start TTC

My son was born at the hospital, but I would really like to research possibly having a home birth in the future.  Any good (esp. Austin specific) sites or nurse midwives to start researching?

DH isn't onboard, so I want to discuss with him before TTC.  We both might be happy with just "one and done", so this is another thing we need to agree on/consider.

  • They don't do home births, but if your husband is resistant to home birth, you might consider the Austin Area Birthing Center. We did all of our prenatals there and planned on birthing there. We ended up getting transferred to a hospital after a day of labor, which was unfortunate, but we REALLY liked them.

  • Ditto pp almost word-for-word.....we labored at AABC and ended up with an emergency section.  (At a hospital, obvs.)  I LOVE AABC, and honestly feel it's the best medical care I've ever received.  I was open to a home birth, but DH freaked his freak at the thought of being anywhere but a hospital.  So it was a good compromise for us.  In the end when we had to transport after 17 hours of excruciating labor that HAD to end in a c-section, I was glad that we were 5 minutes from the hospital at the birthing center instead of 20 minutes away had we been at home.  Good luck with all of your decisions!

    Yes   lol

I love it when I see tickers like that!  Thanks for the recs, ladies...I will check out the birthing center.  My first labor was "only" 13 hours, but a lot of what didn't go as I would've liked I think was hospital specific.  At the end of the day, I got a healthy baby, but I think I could've had a better experience.  I really hate that they made me balance on my tailbone when I had done a ton of squats during pregnancy to prepare for un-medicated birth...

  • Another vote for AABC... I was also a hospital transfer, however. (weird that there are 3 of us right here!). I'm back there for number 2 and hope to actually give birth there this time. The midwives are wonderful.  I didn't look into a home birth.

  • There's also a birthing center in Georgetown:

    Central Texas Birth Center (https://texasbirthcenter.com/)

    They offer homebirth service also.

  • I am touring AABC in two weeks. I am surprised so many were moved to the hospital as they claim only 10% are moved to the hospital.

Did you all feel like it was frantic when you were moved or an emergency. Or did you feel well taken care of at all times.

  • We are using the Central Texas Birth Center in Georgetown and they offer the option of either home birth or the use of their birth center and a water birth is available for both options. I love them!! they were just voted "Best Birth Center" by the Austin Birth Awards and their midwife Heather Hilton was voted "Best Midwife". I highly recommend them!
  • The local ICAN group has lots of recommendations for homebirths and birth centers. Look them up! :
  • I'm going to Birthwise birthing center.  I toured the S. AABC and  Birthwise.  It was a hard decision for us but the end dicision was made on how small the practice was at Birthwise (8-10 births per month compared to 20-25), a lower transfer rate and the real kicker for me was the personal service (midwives cell phone numbers are available for emergencies vs reaching an answering service). Both places seemed great and we really had a hard time deciding.  Plus this is my first so I can't report on my actual experience but I wanted to give you this place to review as well.  My husband was not on board at first either but after the tours and watching The Business of Being Born he is 100% in.  Good luck
