These people need to just STFU. Seriously.
"Sexual abuse is reprehensible, especially when it involves children, and no one starting with Joe Paterno condones or minimizes it. The horrific acts committed by Jerry Sandusky shock the conscience of every decent human being. How Sandusky was able to get away with his crimes for so long has yet to be fully understood, despite the claims and assertions of the Freeh report.
"The release of the Freeh report has triggered an avalanche of vitriol, condemnation and posthumous punishment on Joe Paterno. The NCAA has now become the latest party to accept the report as the final word on the Sandusky scandal. The sanctions announced by the NCAA today defame the legacy and contributions of a great coach and educator without any input from our family or those who knew him best.
"That the President, the Athletic Director and the Board of Trustees accepted this unprecedented action by the NCAA without requiring a full due process hearing before the Committee on Infractions is an abdication of their responsibilities and a breach of their fiduciary duties to the University and the 500,000 alumni. Punishing past, present and future students of the University because of Sandusky?s crimes does not serve justice. This is not a fair or thoughtful action; it is a panicked response to the public's understandable revulsion at what Sandusky did.
"The point of due process is to protect against this sort of reflexive action. Joe Paterno was never interviewed by the University or the Freeh Group. His counsel has not been able to interview key witnesses as they are represented by counsel related to ongoing litigation. We have had no access to the records reviewed by the Freeh group. The NCAA never contacted our family or our legal counsel. And the fact that several parties have pending trials that could produce evidence and testimony relevant to this matter has been totally discounted.
"Unfortunately all of these facts have been ignored by the NCAA, the Freeh Group and the University."https://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.s....t_river_default
Re: Paterno family statement re NCAA ruling

That line above is what did it for me. Really, people, really? Because YOUR BELOVED JOE helped him cover it up!!!!!!

I know, right?
I get that he was their dad/husband/uncle, whatever. But dudes. Issue an apology and shut the he!! up already. This is not about Joe Paterno's legacy, you dipshits.

Oh, and ITA with the sentiment too. /headdesk

I know, right? Their sense of entitlement is just off the wall crazy.
I feel sorry for the kids currently enrolled at Penn State and the kids who worked their asses off to get those (now vacated) wins over that 13 year period.
I do not feel sorry for JoePa or JoePa's family. They need to take a step back and realize that he tried to cover this up for the sake of himself and a football program.
I'm just suprised they didn't reiterate their seating wants/needs for the upcoming football season.
I agree with Mbenit - they should have declined to comment.
Abhorrent.
I actually just got into an argument about this with my dad, who is an attorney and huge college football fan (albeit not a Penn St. fan). He believes this is an unfair punishment since the crimes were not football or NCAA infractions. I think that's a disgusting position to take. These people in a position of authority at Penn State held their precious football program in higher regard than these innocent children. It makes me sick.
I saw the title of this thread and I thought to myself, "I shouldn't read this, it will just pi$$ me off." Yep, it did.
Seriously Paternos? Really? Why are they so concerned about protecting his reputation when he didn't give two $hits about protecting a child? Ugh, *DIACF
I'm a bit torn on this subject. I could see where the family is coming from, not that I agree with their response, but they did nothing wrong in this scandal. It is sad to them that their family member died such a horrific death and then to face the truth of what he did. They are probably in a sense of denial. Maybe one day, when this is not all fresh and new, they will accept it. But perhaps they could do that without being so aggressive in criticizing the investigation or making such outlandish demands as some have said.
I'm unfortunately living in central PA but I'm not from here. This entire thing is so annoying. I like how someone on the local news site here pointed out that according to the Paterno family it's awful and everyone involved did something wrong....just not Joe Paterno...yeah ok.
Everyone who is a Penn State Alumni is acting all shocked and saddened. Oh boo hoo, the school has to pay a fine, lose wins that are already in the past, not go to a few bowl games and lose out on some scholarships. GASP!! You mean a Univeristy will have to focus on academics!!!!!! How could they!!
