Baby Names

should we eliminate girl names ending in an "A" Because of our last name?

our last name  ends in an "A" and ALL the girl names we like end in an "A" Is this going to sound silly?

if  your last name ends in an "A" does your daughters?

Re: should we eliminate girl names ending in an "A" Because of our last name?

  • It just depends on the names.  Sometimes it can work; other times it can't.

  • We have a similar problem with "ie" and "y" endings, but as long as they aren't the same # of syllables I think you're fine. For example, one name that works with our last name is Mallory, because our LN is only 2 syllables.

So, say your last name is Parka. Don't go with Martha Parka, but maybe something like Arianna Parka would work. Get me?

We had the same long e problem, and at first I was totally against any names ending in that sound (even though mine does). DD ended up being named Ruby and it works because our last name is 4 syllables. With A names, it definitely depends on how you pronounce the A. For example Hanna Anderson. The ending sound of Hanna is more of an "uh", where Anderson definitely begins with the phonetic short "a". Then you have the long A like in Avery. So really, it just depends on the two names

I think OP was asking how it would sound if both names ended in the -a sound.

Yep.  Total reading comprehension fail.  Which is funny, because I started off making the same point as you with the long "e".

  • as long as the names don't rhyme, you should be okay.

My son isn't my DH's biological son. At birth I gave him his "bio dad's" last name, then after we broke up and he had nothing to do with my son, I petitioned him to have his last name changed to my last name (my maiden). Then me and DH got married and he adopted my son, so now my son is Brenton Glenn. None of the other last names ended with an "n"....but it doesn't sound bad together with both names ending in "n"
