Moms with fur babies....

How did you keep you crawling babies out of the food and water bowl? I am not worried about our dogs being territorial - rather choking and drowning hazards. If we feed outside, we have ant problems - plus they need water available at all times. When we put buy gates up, it will restrict the dogs too. So, it isn't like any other room would work rather than the kitchen/dinning area.

 What was your remedy?

Re: Moms with fur babies....

  • I just redirected her.  After a week or so of doing that, she learned not to go near it.

  • I redirected my son and I  tried to feed my dogs while he was eating his own meal.

  • I hadn't really thought about it being a drowning hazard, but maybe. Couldn't you raise the dogs food?

  • We schedule feedings and watering, and give them ice throughout the day as treats so they stay hydrated.  They are both indoor dogs.  I don't foresee it being an issue.

  • Well, we have a cat, but we moved her food/water/litter to the barely used formal dining room. Gated it off, and cut out a hole in the gate (big enough for kitty to squeeze through, but not baby to crawl through).

  • When DS was younger, I fed the dog after he went to bed.  Now that he's older, he actually helps me feed her and loves it.  As for the water, when he started showing interest in it, I put it up out of his reach.  Eventually he grew out of that and now just ignores it.  Her water sits on the floor all day.  Granted there are days when he'll throw a toy in it or put his foot in it, but most days he doesn't even acknowledge the bowl is there.

  • I have no experience with this, but it made me realize that we might have an issue once the baby is mobile. Our cats' food and water is on the floor in the kitchen, and I feel like if I put up a baby gate between the living room and kitchen, it might be too restrictive for the cats. They could probably jump over it fairly easy but now I wonder if there's anywhere else I can put it to keep a baby out of it.

We moved the food and water bowl into our bathroom and don't let DS in there unsupervised.

  • Nothing. I just watched my son. When he was crawling he was definitely never alone, haha. In fact, he was never even crawling in the kitchen. Not really a safe place in general.

  • cats can jump baby gates fairly easily.  as long as the gate is secure enough for there to be a half second touch down.

they do make gates that pets can fit through

when DS was extremely intersted in the dogs food/ water (about 9-12 months) we just put it up when DS was "loose".  we feed the dogs during our meals, and I would allow them to have water when DS was napping/ asleep for the night, or contained in his high chair.  (they also learned to sit and "beg" under the table that had their water contained if they wanted a drink)

Eventually DS got to the point (around 15 months) that we could teach him that it was a no-no.  and now he isn't fazed by it and actually helps me feed the dogs.

This.   In fact...a baby gate in our household would only contain a baby.   When our dog was a puppy, we had to stack two baby gates on top of one another, because he could crawl over a single one.   Then, one night we came home and he was on the other side of the gates.  Both were still firmly lodged in place. I still have no idea how he managed to scale a 6 foot high gate.     The cats...they would mock me if I tried to contain them with a gate.  lol...  They are like flying monkeys, those guys.

  • Redirecting here as well. I can put up the food, but the dog needs her water. If I cannot be on top of DS to redirect, I put her water in another spot in the house - I can close up living room and kitchen from the rest - so while I am doing stuff in the kitchen, the dog can be in the rest of the house with her stuff while baby crawls around in the baby proofed, closed off area.
