Supplementing - Formula

In September I will be starting my student teaching. I am hoping to just supplement during the day and still be able to nurse in the mornings and night. I just don't want to have to pump when I'm in someone else's classroom, I feel like I should be able to have lunches and planning periods to learn from my mentor teacher. (Teachers- do you agree with this?) I really don't have a problem with formula or supplementing, I'm sure it'll be easier on me to not have to pump at all during the days.

To the people who have done this, were you successful? Were you able to maintain your supply in the mornings and nights? Also, I have no clue what formula I should be getting. DS has never had formula so I'm kind of starting from the beginning with this.

Thanks so much!

Re: Supplementing - Formula

  • I did this with DD#1 and had no problems with my supply..I did PT nursing from when she was 6mos to 9mos..as for formula I use similac mostly bc those are the most coupons I had. DD has had no problems with it she only gets about 4oz a day though..rest is BM

  • I just started doing this about 2 weeks ago. It's been going great. Now my supply has been decreasing since I started back to work, so we'd had to supplement here and there since then. But now when we're apart, he's on all formula. I haven't noticed any negative changes in him and it's making his momma much happier and easier to be around. We use Similac Advanced when I have coupons or checks, but we've also used the Walmart & Target versions of Similac Advanced without issue. Good luck to you!

I am wanting to start only BFing in the morning at at night too so I can stop pumping at work.  I have quite a bit of frozen BM but not enough to get him until age 1 on just the BM.  Would I just mix the formula and BM until I run out of BM and then just give straight formula?

    Thanks!

  • I have been nursing morning and night and giving formula during the day for a little over a week and so far so good.  I gave up pumping because my output was awful (5oz total all day, she takes 3 7-8oz bottles at daycare).

    Good luck!

  • I never had a great supply, so I was concerned when I was trying to wean down from the 3-4 feedings I was able to do to just 1 morning feeding- but it went well and I think I could have done that as long as I needed to. If you think about it from the perspective of your body adjusting to produce more milk when your baby needs it, it should be the same principle.  GL!

  • We didn't mix the two just so I could keep straight what was in each bottle. Since formula is only good for 24 hrs, I would have the babysitter feed that first so if there were leftovers it would be BM which could carry over to the next day.

  • i've been doing this for about a month or so. i don't mix. i just nurse morning/night & she gets formula during the day. haven't had any problems with my supply except that it did go down a little right before i got my period for the first time.

my only suggestion is to nurse BEFORE giving solids if you give in morning/night in order to keep your supply there.

  • another helpful hint is to just serve the formula room temp with water if you use the powdered kind. you don't need to heat it & it just eliminates that step.
  • Thanks for all of the information girls! I really appreciate it!
