Food Allergy

It is milk allergy?

My pedi has been no help so I'm asking you all now. My DS is 14mo and still on soy formula, cuz everytime I give him dairy his anus gets beat red and will bleed. I nursed him til 10 months with no dairy but didn't cut out all hidden. So his bottomis always red but he's very bad when given Straight dairy. I've asked the pedi and his answer is milk upsets my stomach sometimes too:( would u go to an allergist or wait a while longer and try milk again.

Re: It is milk allergy?

  • Sorry it should be is it a milk allergy?
  • How is your LO's stools?  Are they getting diarhea and perhaps that's causing the redness?  It's hard to say really.  It could be an allergy--it could be an intolerance.  Are there any rashes when they eat the foods/drink milk?  My DS1 would get a horrible rash around the milk and then on the torso.  He had a VERY high milk (all dairy) allergy though.

I would certainly see an allergist.  Pedi's are great--but they are not specialists.  And it sounds like yours is not taking this seriously.  A LO's bottom should not always be red.  Poor little guy.  In the meantime, get some good cream and keep it on there.  Good ol' A&D ointment does the trick for us.

  • Thanks for your response, his stools are not loose or diahrrea they are formed of all colors, lol. But even with putting A&A, desktop, Vaseline, newmans nipple cream it is always pink or red. I'll try to find a ped allergist and make an appt.

It's worth it.  Honestly, if we hadn't gotten checked by an allergist I wouldn't have known about the peanut allergy until it was possibly too late.  NOR the other allergies---and he would have been miserable for longer.  It was a good thing.  They did just a blood test for us---which was the toughest part---I highly recommend going to a place that works on kids--they know how to get blood quickly.

  • my DD is mspi & hers gets like that a lot too. it will turn very red & rashy but no bleeding. it happens from certain solids also. i find if you don't change a poopy diaper iMMEDIATELY, it gets very bad. i showed it to my pedi & he said that she just has very sensitive skin b/c i had cut out all dairy/soy including hidden & she was supplemented with neocate.
  • The redness on his bottom is only around the anus. His bottom is not rashy its just red and at times bleeds:(
  • My LO has several food intolerances and he cannot handle dairy or soy, he gets diarrhea and will get a red bottom like you're describing.  I would definitely go to an allergist.  We saw one when my LO was 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months old.  All of his allergy testing came back negative leading the allergist to believe that my son has more a food "intolerance" rather than an allergy, and that hopefully he'll eventually outgrow it.  We'll see!

In the meantime here is some good reading for you:

Also, I forgot to mention, I know you said your LO is on soy but if he "always has a red bottom" then it's quite possible that he's having trouble with soy proteins too becuase they are very similar to dairy proteins and half of all LO's who cannot handle dairy also have trouble with soy.  It's something to consider!

If my pedi gave me this response... I would change to a new practice.  Intolerances and allergies should be taken seriously.  Your son sounds like he has a classic sign of an intolerance to milk.  I would not give straight dairy - and it could not hurt to take him to a pediatric allergist.
