Low Lying Placenta

So, at my NT scan when I was 13 weeks, they determined that I have a low-lying placenta and told me no aerobic activity or sex till I have my next ultrasound to make sure all is well because it's supposed to move up on its own.

Well, she then told me I wouldn't have my next ultrasound till my anatomy scan around 20 weeks (they originally told me I would have it around 18 weeks).  Apparently, I had a huge reaction on my face when she told me that she would go ahead and schedule for me to have an ultrasound to check on the placenta when I am a little over 17 weeks. My doctor then said 3 weeks after that we will schedule my anatomy scan to be done.

My question is, do you think the sono tech will try and check the sex out for us or just strictly look at my placenta and call it a day?  I wasn't sure if anyone has dealt with this in previous pregnancies or not. I am very grateful that everything seems to be on track as far as the baby's development goes -- everything went well with the NT scan.  My baby is so active, they had to send me to a specialist to get my NT scan done because my regular sono tech wasn't able to get our baby to sit still to get the measurements done -- our baby is all over the place!

Thanks in advance! Big Smile

  • I don't think it would hurt to ask!  I think the techs have fun revealing the gender, so I bet if the person is able to tell they would love to share.

  • I had this with my first. I had alow lying placenta nad they made everything sound like it could be so bad. Mine was about 1-2 cm at the time just above my cervix. They typically want it at least 3 cm away for vaginal birth. They had me go back in at 16 weeks then again at 20 for a/s. They then again wanted me to continue going it every few weeks... I ended up only doing the 16 week nad 20 week ones to check, then a 36 week one to check again and it was completely fine!... but here's the thing, it won't move all that much and you won't know the real difference until the end. Ask about distance from cervix and try not to stress yourself out over them wanting you to go in over and over. I would just wait and do one around 33-36 weeks to determine the real difference in movement!

I have complete previa - and yes, my techs are so nice they will show me anything I ask when I got in. at my 13 week u/s she tried to see what the baby was - no luck, not positioned well. My next pervia u/s check is 18 weeks. We are going to do my a/s then too. I should definitely find out!

It never hurts to ask. I hate being high risk, but I love my peri office. The techs and docs are all good people. They see and hear it all 100 times a day & still seem happy to help.

  • I bet if they get a good shot they'll check the gender at that appointment.
