Cloth Diapering

CD cheat sheet

As requested, here's the cheat sheet I compiled for my SIL.  Thanks to the ladies here for helping give me some tips I thought she could use.  Some of it is just my opinion on how CDs work, and there are other ways to do certain points I covered.

Things to Keep in Mind When Buying Diapers:

-Have enough diapers to change every 1-2 hours (30+ to wash every other day)

-One-size diapers will not fit a newborn, even if they claim to fit at 7lbs.  You will need newborn diapers until baby is 10lbs

-Try a few brands before buying your full diaper stash.  Diapers fit all babies differently.

-Hemp and bamboo are more absorbent than microfiber

-Microfiber shouldn't directly touch baby's skin as it can cause a rash.  Natural fibers are fine against the skin.

How to Prep Diapers (to make them absorbent):

-Natural fibers (cotton, hemp, bamboo): Wash and dry 5 times OR boil 30 minutes, wash and dry once

-Synthetic fibers and diapers with elastic and PUL (waterproof layer): Wash and dry once

-Do not prep natural and synthetic fibers together.  Once prepped, they can be washed together

How to wash Cloth Diapers:

Cold prerinse, Hot wash with Detergent, Cold rinse, Cold second rinse

-Breastmilk and Formula poop (and meconium) can go in the washer as it is water soluble.  Once baby starts solids, flush poop down the toilet.

-Use cloth diaper safe detergent (https://www.diaperjungle.com/detergent-chart.html)

-Anything with elastic or PUL shouldn't be put in the dryer except on medium or low.  Line drying helps the diapers last longer

-To get out stains, hang wet diapers in the sun

-If, after washing, the diapers have a barnyard smell, use more detergent.  If they smell like ammonia, use less detergent

How to Strip Diapers (if they start repelling moisture):

Put a squirt of dawn soap in the wash.  Rinse multiple times until no more suds appear in the water.

Using Diaper Rash Cream:

-Normal diaper rash cream can cause diapers to repel moisture.  Use cloth diaper safe cream (https://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/diaperrashcreams.htm).

-Avoid creams with zinc oxide.

-If you need to use medicated diaper rash cream, use a cotton or fleece liner (don't wash the liners with the rest of your diapers).

Other useful tips:

-Baby washcloths and water make great cloth wipes that can be washed with the diapers

 My's Favorite Products:

-OsoCozy prefolds closed with a Snappi

-One-size Flip cover

-Alvababy pockets with Thirsties hemp inserts

-Kushies Cotton Diaper Liners

-CJ's BUTTer diaper cream

-All Free and Clear detergent

Re: CD cheat sheet

  • That looks awesome!  I wish I knew someone who was planning to CD, so I could make a care package!

What about the youtube videos (Clothdiapering 101) as a link?

Good idea.  I'll have to add it to the list.

  • How about links to buying used diapers and their abbreviations? That took me a while to figure out (EUC etc).
