"Boy and Girl?" "No, Girl and Girl"

Why do people always assume that the twins are a boy and girl??? I got this question from an older lady at the park yesterday, as I walked my girls around in pink and purple TUTUS! She was definitely close enough to say hi to them, so she was close enough to see the clothes.

It's really not a big deal, just a little annoying. I do put hair bows on the girls sometimes because I think it's adorable, but not every day! And I mean, ALL babies are bald or have shorter hair. Give it time to grow!

Okay, rant over. :)

Re: "Boy and Girl?" "No, Girl and Girl"

  • I have 2 girls too and got that a lot too.  At first I got a little paranoid like why do they think one of my babies looks like a boy?? Lol.  But babies are babies and people just assume b/g twins!

I get "two girls?" because my boy has longer hair. Even though the girl has a bow. People are dumb. Well-meaning but dumb :)

  • People used to assume b/g with my boys as well. Poor E was always assumed to be the girl.

This is what I wonder...which one do they think is the boy?

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets this. One day I dressed one in blue and thought it was my fault, but it doesn't matter, people always assume b/g even when everything I have is pink or purple.

I used to get this a lot and I had 2 boys. Once I was done with the infant carrier stage I stopped hearing it, which is weird b/c the carriers are exactly the same. So you'd think they'd assume same-sex twins before b/g, but whatever.
  • I have a boy and a girl and I get asked if they're two boys (happened when O's hair was shorter and they both were wearing blue as well as a month and a half ago when she was in a lavender top with a flowered butterfly on it and jeans with flowers and butterflies embroidered on them) or they assume that O is the girl because he has the longer hair.

  • That is weird. I think this stems from this common misconception that twins of the same sex are ALWAYS identical so therefore, twins that aren't identical are boy/girl. At least that's what I've come across. People for some reason seem to forget that fraternal twins can be the same sex. Even if the twins are identical and just don't look much alike yet, they assume fraternal.

We were pretty confident our twins were fraternal before we knew the sexes because we put 2 embryos back so when we told people that they were likely fraternal, a lot of people assumed it was a given they'd be boy/girl...very odd.

  • We have b/g and if people hear they are twins they always comment on how cute my little boys are.  My daughter didn't have much hair for quite a while and even now it's still short - but she was usually dressed in pink.  It just seems to me like when people hear they are twins they think they have to be the same sex.

Ranks right up there with knowing they are b/g, and while looking at them (they look different) asking if they are identical or not. (good thing the joys of parenting outweigh having to put up with the dumb comments, hey?)

  • @Jessica - I have clearly identical girls who are one and i always get are the b/g, even when they are wearing the same outfit lol! People really are just that dumb I guess ha ha
  • People always assume that one or both of my girls are boys. I may not dress them in pink and frills every day, but the pink blankets should kind of be a tip off.

  • No one ever guesses that mine are two girls, even when they're both wearing sundresses. I always get "two boys?" or "boy and girl?" I think they always think Claire is a boy because she's 2 lbs bigger than Etta or something. And also, in the South, people expect lots of frills and giant bows on their heads, which is not my style.

Same here. Lots of people assume that my bigger girl is a boy.
