2nd Trimester

Cat Box

The past couple of days I have had to scoop out the cat box and realized I have been doing it like before I was pregnant, without gloves.  Regardless I always wash my hands but then last night I had to empty the box, wash it with lysol and refill and again without gloves.  I told my husband and he told me not to worry, there is probably nothing wrong.  I can't help feeling like I should call the doctor right away but at the same time I don't want to bother then yet again this week.  Should I be overly concerned?

Re: Cat Box

  • We have a cat also, I don't wear gloves but I do wear a mask, and I put the poop in a seal-able sandwich baggie, and of course wash my hand afterward.  Now I may be wrong about this, (which I often am LOL) but if you cat is an in-door cat like mine, you have a lesser chance of "contaminated" poop.  I wouldn't worry about it, but if it will lower your stress then call your ob office, they get these types of calls everyday.

  • Nah, don't bother calling.  You can mention it next time you go in and ask if they want to do any tests.

However, change your litter box practices.  If DH really won't do it for you, make sure to start wearing gloves... but still wash up thoroughly afterward, just in case.

  • Why isn't your husband taking care of the litter box?

Like PP said if you have indoor cats then it is very unlikely that they have contracted toxoplasmosis. I wouldn't worry about it. But if it is driving you crazy go ahead and call. I am sure you're doctor is used to women who get concerned all the time. And let your husband empty the litterbox.

  • Hubby has been on a trip for the past couple of day and returns on Thursday.  Usually he does this and has been since I got pregnant. Kitties are indoor cats and have never even had so much as a flea or needed to go to the vet but for routine vaccinations.  I think I'll wait until my doctors appointment next Tuesday and bring it up then.  Thanks!!!

  • I'm not sure if this is accurate, but I read that if you've had cats for awhile, chances are your body has an immunity to toxoplasmosis,  and with them being indoor cats, there is a very slim chance they actually have it. I'm in the same boat, but my DH still handles everything with the litter box. It really helps me out because it's one less thing to worry about and gives me more time to do other things. Plus it makes me gag. I'm still trying to figure out a way for him to be able to change all the poopy diapers Big Smile

Then your risk for toxo is very very low. You have a better chance of getting it from raw meat or gardening.
