NT Scan - What kind of ultrasound?

Hi ladies,

I have my NT scan on Friday.  I'll be exactly 12 weeks.  At this point do they do the external sonogram or is it still transvaginal?

 Thanks!!

  • Most likely external unless the baby isn't in a favorable position.

  • It's external and for me even they had a lot a problems getting good measurements and they still didn't do a transvaginal.
  • I think it depends on your doctor. At my OB office they told me they'd do external and transvaginal until the end of the first tri. I really hope when I go next week they just do an external, though. The transvaginal is just uncomfortable.

It will be external, but they may try transvag if they can't get a good reading (or they may just ask you to come back at another time).

Mine ended up being both.  They started external, but baby wouldn't get in a good position, so they decided to try transvaginal.  That didn't really work either, so they went back to external and after about 1 hour they baby finally got in a good position.

  • It depends on the doctor. Mine does transvaginal only until 16 weeks.

  • Mine was external, the doc suggested to drink some caffeine before going in and have a full bladder  for a clearer picture.  The little guy was doing back flips in there it was amazing!!  She got ALOT of good angles and was able to tell us the results immediately.  Good news and no need to expensive blood tests. Phew!

Good luck and enjoy the experience, it's pretty amazing stuff.
