XP from 1st Tri--A little nervous about NT scan

I'll admit, the main reason I said yes to it was because I wanted to see baby again. I also figured if there is a defect they can fix before birth, the testing will allow for that option. Now, I'm scared that they will find something. Who has done this before? Did they find anything?

Re: XP from 1st Tri--A little nervous about NT scan

  • The NT scan doesn't give you any definitive results - it just gives you odds.  I recently received my results which were a 1 in 60 chance of Downs.  I admit I'm really nervous but my doctor recommended going through the level II ultrasound (which people have this anyway @ 20 wks).  If everything looks good, the odds go down to 1 in 120, according to my doc.  She also told me that most people get very nervous and most of the time everything is fine. After your NT scan results, you will have the option of doing further testing.  I would just try to stay calm - and don't worry unless you are given a reason to (easier said then done, I know!).

  • I also got the NT scan just because we wanted to see baby again. I definitely had those thoughts, like, "OMG what is something really is wrong?" And would get a little stressed, but decided that (since my age puts me at the lowest risk for anything) I had nothing to worry about. And I didn't! :) It was so great to see him moving around in there. We saw him swallow and jump and he was the cutest little alien ever. I think you'll love it and it will be worth the stress. It's nice to have that as a buffer until the 20 week ultrasound (which I had a week ago). Without that U/S at 12 weeks, I would have just died (probably) waiting :P
  • I would suggest you google it real quick before you do anything else. <
    > The results (as PP said )only gives you chances you could be carrying a child with certain defects, but the defects are not "fixable". They are genetic imperfections that will affect your baby for the rest of their lives. This screen helps parents determine if they need to move to the next level of testing. <
    > Also, you may want to check to see if your insurance covers this screening. Not all do, and I have heard of many people getting bills for hundreds of dollars bc of it. If you are interested in just seeing your LO again, request a sonogram from your provider and it may save you some $$. <
    > I did get this done and I actually was not nervous about the results until the day I was getting them. :) It is very fun to see LO wiggling around in there and finding out the baby's sex early! GL!

  • I was a bit nervous about ours, too, but it was great! The sonographer was incredible, and he gave me some peace of mind. Like others have said, they can't COMPLETELY tell everything from the scan, but they can get an idea. I'm sure it'll go well!!
