Breast pump?

My insurance company says they only cover manual breast pumps, are there any that are good?  Or should I just look into buying an electric one?

Re: Breast pump?

  • If you are going back to work you will want an electric (preferably double).  If you are staying home a manual is just fine.  My Avent double electric was also a manual and I liked it for both.  My sister was working a few days a week and did okay pumping with a hand pump for those few days.

  • how often do you plan on pumping?  a manual pump is going to take much longer.  just to save time i would buy the electric

  • I plan on mostly pumping so I am buying a double electric pump. I think a manual would be fine if you were only going to pump occasionally and mostly nurse.

  • If insurance will cover a manual pump, get it and give it a try when you are home. If you don't like it nothing lost. It would be good to have a backup anyway!

  • I exclusively pumped for 4 months with a Medela Harmony manual pump. I would get at least 4 ounces a session, in about 10-15 minutes. Every woman is going to react to pumps differently, but if they are offering you a free one take it. Even if you end up getting a double electric, a manual is nice for if you're in the car, or in a pinch somewhere.

  • I think it depends on how often you plan to pump. Manual's take longer and everyone I've talked to says they've gotten hand cramps from using them.

  • i agree with PPs..

if you plan to pump a decent amount, investing in a good electric pump is a good idea..

if you are working and would like to pump a lot more, then a double electric is the way to go..

the manual ones dont cost too much.. so you can try them (something like the medela harmony manual breast pump)

i plan to pump when I get back to work so am looking at the Medela Pump in Style Advanced
