?about breast pumps & new preventative care legislation

In a link someone posted from the HHSA in a related thread below, it stated the cost would be towards RENTING a pump.  The other was more vague, making it sound like it might possibly be towards renting or purchasing?  Does anyone know if actually purchasing is an option and how it would work?  Do you turn in for a reimbursement?  Have never had anything like this.

...Also, it looks like you have to know when your insurance plan year starts.  Mine starts in January...and LO is due in January.  Just in the nick of time.  If LO comes early in Dec, I'd have to wait until January to benefit.

  • I got nothing. I am just buying a pump since I am a picky wench and renting one just skeeves me out.

  • We are in the process of renewing/selecting our plan for the next year, beginning in Sept. There was a notice included that listed things that now qualified as preventative care.  It listed that a breast pump could be rented or purchased (as long as it was from a licensed provider, specifically mentioned that off the shelf retail would not be covered) and covered at 100%.  I am not sure if it's a reimbursement situation or how they cover it and I haven't yet checked into what qualifies as a licensed provider.

  • Each plan is different in covering a rental unit or one that you purchase.  My insurance company (United Health Care) will cover one that is purchased but I have to buy it through their medical supply company.
  • I'm due in November so it wouldn't help me since my year starts in Jan. and my insurance website says

    "TRICARE does not cover:

    • Electric hospital-grade breast pumps for convenience
    • Basic electric breast pumps
    • Manual breast pumps"
So I am just buying mine, obviously.

  • My insurance will only cover a manual one if there are latch issues or I have a medical reason I can't breast feed, no electric. :(
  • My DH checked last night, and he said it is just for renting a pump. Also, I am not eligible under my insurance b/c we were grandfathered in. I don't mind; we expected to have to purchase one, anyway, so I don't feel like we lost anything.

  • My plan covers breast pump rental at 100% if there is a medical need.  Purchases are not covered under the insurance, but they are FSA reimbursable.
