Success after IF

If you used an egg donor

I'm assuming the medications for the donor were your responsibility, or if they had insurance, did they use their own?  Would it be out of the question if I donated the meds I have left over to my donor?  I have some Follistim that we paid for & it would be nice to be able to use it.

How long did it take from the start of the process until you had a donor match?

Re: If you used an egg donor

  • Hello, I remember you from the loss boards.

Well, we used donors, but it was a frozen donor cycle.  We needed an egg donor, but we decided to use donors for both instead (just a personal choice).  I thought I would mention what we did just to give you some more options.

We went with frozen donor embies because it was much, much cheaper.  The problem for us was that the wait for donor embies was going to be around 12 months.  So we started researching and we decided to go to the Czech Republic.  They have a large bank of donor embies that are created from donors and not IF couples.  Basically, most women go there for donor egg cycles (another option you may want to consider), so after the donor is stimmed, if for any reason the recipient can't travel, they retrieve the eggs anyway.  Then they use donor sperm to fertlize the eggs.  From there they go into a bank and wait for a couple to come along.  The bank is large enough that we were able to match both of our features to the embies we used.

A fresh cycle over there is around 8-9k and a frozen is about 2k.  A fresh cycle at our clinic in St. Louis was going to be around 30k.  We travelled in the summer which was very expensive, but right now it should be pretty cheap.  For a donor cycle you only have to be there about 5 days or so.

As for your original questions, I'm really not sure.  I would just ask your clinic how they feel about donating meds to your donor and how long you can expect to wait.  Using donors was a difficult decision, but we are so, so happy that we decided to try it.  GL!!
