Dumba** comment on GMA

So I'm watching GMA and they were talking about what adults can do to not have many colds. Are you ready for this? Study suggested to have many kids. Ok. MH even sat that and shook his head. Ugh....stupid pp. Childless pp I guess have more colds. Whatever.

Re: Dumba** comment on GMA

  • God, I hope nobody takes that study seriously-- our state aid system is already overburdened as it is!

  • Only half the time? LOL

My mom watches those morning shows. Then she tries to spout medical knowledge to me and argue with me because GMA or The Today Show said that there was a study. Like you can't find a study for and against everything these days! And like those morning "news" shows are a bastion of great journalism... They are entertainment-- even according to people who work on them.

But what do I know about things like health and medicine? I just work with them and keep up on the latest evidence-based practices on a daily basis. My mom drives me insane with these morning show bits.

I think even she, however, would consider this latest statement just spectacularly ridiculous.

  • This makes no sense to me.  I've gotten sick way more since I had a kid.  They're little petri dishes!

Or if I think about it, maybe I have had less colds, just more nasty stomach bugs and strep throat.  What a ridiculous thing to spend time reporting about.

  • OK, I would need to know more details of the study, but if they're talking about parents with older children, I can kinda believe it.  As a mom of a young child in daycare, I can confirm that she gets sick A LOT and we get sick A LOT more than we used to because of it.  Everyone tells me she's building her immune system up, but damn - did I really need to get mine built too?  LOL.  Anyways, I understand from other parents with kids that have been in daycare that the kids get everything when they are little (and so do the parents), but as they get older their immune systems get super strong and their school age kids hardly ever get sick at all.  So since parents are exposed to a lot more viruses than non-parents, over time I could see how they might catch fewer illnesses as the kids get older.

    This does actually make sense.

When you have kids you are exposed to more germs.  Over time, you build an immunity to the viruses.  Eventually you stop getting every little sniffle the kids bring home and hopefully even avoid some of the stomach nastiness they bring home.  However, initially, they share everything which is not so much fun.

It's true for teachers or those in the medical field as well.  I'm a teacher and my first few years teaching I caught it all.  If the kids got sick, so did I.  My first year teaching I had pneumonia the first week of October.  Now, 12 years in, I seldom catch what the kids get.

Oh, and hand sanitizer is my best friend so that helps too.

  • I agree to a point but the way they said it....everyone should have alot of kids. What about the pp that can't have any? That just rubbed me the wrong way....that's all. Just grumpy this morning.

  • Yeah they really shouldn't have said it that way.  And let me tell you, I was perfectly happy pre-kid getting sick maybe once a year.  The fact is, adults are so much better at avoiding germs that, if we practice good hygiene & handwashing, we really shouldn't get sick that often if we don't have little kids around.  So having kids, if you ask me, is not a good plan for staying healthy.  I think they did a disservice by not mentioning that in order to get to that blissful rarely-ill state, you have to go through a lot of germ hell.  I would take the kids but pass on the germs if I could, thankyouverymuch.  lol :)
