wasnt sure about this I have had mixed responses. Before baby gets here should I was all of her clothes before she wears them? or is it okay to just leave them and wash after she wears them?
Definitely wash first! Especially if they're not organic, but even then I'd still wash first. Use a detergent free of chemicals and dyes. Don't listen to people when they tell you to use Dreft.. that stuff is chock full of nasty chemicals. I think something like All Free & Clear should be just fine to use. The main thing is you want a very gentle detergent.. baby's skin is extra sensitive
Definitely wash before and use a free and clear detergent. It doesn't have to be a specific brand, a generic store brand will do. My two youngest have sensitive skin and the doctor recommended a free and clear detergent. It's the only detergent I use in our home for all of our clothing and bedding and it made a world of difference.
Here are a couple of charts identifying the additives present (or absent) in several different detergent choices. It is intended for those choosing a detergent to wash cloth diapers in, but I still think it's a great reference tool even if you aren't going to CD.
Definitely wash, especially b/c you don't know just how sensitive your baby's skin will be. BUT, my advice, only wash a few things and then wait to see how big/small your baby is before you wash a ton of stuff. You could get stuck with a lot of newborn clothes that the baby never wore!

This! Just wash a couple of outfits that you think you'll use. You never know what size baby will fit into, and whether or not they'll fit it in the right season. For example, DD was born at the beginning of December and we got a ton of adorable Xmas onesies. I washed almost all of them (NB size), but DD didn't end up fitting most of them until after Xmas. I was stuck with a bunch of clothes that were out of season that I couldn't return.

Wash before you use HOWEVER, do not wash EVERYTHING - keep stuff still with tags in case you need to return them...etc.
Yes, THIS!! Wash by size. You will be shocked how some things never get worn, and if you've washed them/removed tags - no returns :S
You can use any detergent, but as others have said, best to stay away from anything scented etc.
As they get older, you can test out your regular detergents - start with socks etc and see what happens. I don't mind the free and clear variety's though, and DH says he doesn't mind NOT smelling like flowers LOL.
I think how much of the clothing you wash is a personal choice.
I washed the stuff that I knew we were going to use and need (i.e. onesies, sleepers), and anything else I waited and washed later (jeans, other outfits). I knew that DS was basically going to live in the sleepers and onesies at least for the first few weeks, so there was no need to wash the other stuff yet, especially anything that I wasn't sure we were ever going to use at all.
Another tip, not that you asked: newborn clothing is very small, so I wouldn't go overboard buying/washing tons of newborn items, because if you end up with a big baby, you may only use those clothes for a couple of weeks before baby outgrows them, and that way you can return/exchange anything you haven't washed, but if you have a little peanut, you can wash more if you need them. Bigger clothes will definitely get worn in the long run, but little ones may not.
ETA: like others said, ALWAYS wash before wear.

I don't wash my baby clothes unless they're 2nd hand (or otherwise "used" and not new) And when I do wash them, I just use the same detergent I use with everyone else's clothes... But that's just me.
Also, unless you have a premie, I recommend buying size 0-3 months, not "newborn" as 0-3 months will last longer so you'll get more use out of them. I did have a few outfits in newborn size, but the vast majority of clothes, for both DS and DD were 0-3, and I'm probably going to re-use most clothes for whatever this baby turns out to be (hopefully finding out Tuesday!) and I'll wash the clothes I'm taking out of storage before baby gets here.
