I just got my full results back from my CVS and they are telling me that some of the cells showed 96 chromosomes instead of 46 but that they are pretty sure it is confined to my placenta and not the baby. I am so confused, why didnt I pay attention in biology?
Re: Anyone familiar with confined placental mosaicism?
I am not familiar with this particular issue, but I am a biologist. What I remember is that in an early embryo part of the cells will separate to form the embryo proper while another group will make the placenta and other extra embryonic tissues. Maybe a cell that was part of the population forming the placenta made a mistake in cell division and ended up with a duplicated genome - 2x the normal number of chromosomes. I am guessing that this is less of a problem when it is just confined to the placenta? It is certainly not a good thing fir the embryo.
Very sorry for the distressing news!
