Can newborn get chicken pox from a recently vaccinated child?

My niece had her one year appointment today and received the chicken pox vaccine. Her pedi said to stay away from our son, as she may be contagious. I don't remember my daughter's pedi ever telling us this. Is this true? Can my niece spread chicken pox to my newborn after receiving the live virus vaccine? Their pedi said to stay away for 10-20 days or something?

Umm, yeah, I think they don't want to visit. DS had no problem being at daycare when he received his, he was the oldest in the infant class. From what I know about vax's are they don't actually get the disease unless given a live virus.

When DS#1 got his vaccination, he got a rash about 2 weeks after the shot. it's a mild form of Chicken pox. About 4% of kids get it. It lasted for a couple of days. The pedi said he should stay away from my immuno-suppressed father and anyone else who hadn't been vaccinated or hadn't had the pox.

Yes, live vaccines can make the recipient transmit the disease.

Hubby says it's theoretically possible, but it's usually just severely immunocompromised people who catch anything from a recently vaccinated person. He said he wouldn't go so far as to recommend someone keep their otherwise healthy baby away from a recently vaccinated child.
