2nd Trimester

prelim amnio results

Our baby has trisomy 13 according to the preliminary results. Has anyone had this happen? and what did you do?

Re: prelim amnio results

  • oh sebailey,I have not had this happen but I am so sorry to hear this. I remember you from first tri and I hate that you are going through this. Stay strong and we will be thinking of you. I have read a lot of beautiful blogs and stories about tri-13 babies and am sending you lots of prayers.

  • I'm so sorry to hear.  Honestly, I don't have an experience or advice to share.  There was a girl who posted on here when I first hit my 2nd trimester - I think she's due in September or October - who found out her baby had Trisomy 13 and chose to carry through the pregnancy.  You'd have to talk to your doctor about your options, but that was what she chose to do.
  • I have a friend who had these results.  Further testing showed the baby had some heart defects and that the baby would not live to birth or much beyond.  She chose to terminate the pregnancy.  She went on to have a healthy pregnancy after that and her baby is now 1 year old.

I know it was a very difficult decision for her and she had a lot of guidance from her doctor.  Of course every decision is individual and difficult.  I wish you nothing but the best at this very hard time.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that.  Definitely see if you can talk with a genetic counselor ASAP who can help to educate you on what's really going on, what the issues/problems will be, and help you learn of all your potential options.

  • I'm so sorry. I don't know enough about trisomy to say exactly what I would do, but MH and I discussed what we would do if our child were going to die at birth or be in any undeniable pain upon being born.

If our counselors, doctors, etc. could tell us without a shadow of a doubt that the above was the case, we would have strongly considered termination.

You might page Roxy (she's on Sept '12 and possibly moved to third tri). She had to terminate due to amniotic band syndrome and might have some insight into making such a tough decision.

We faced this possibility as well. There were some abnormalities during the 18 weeks a/s. Has your hospital had you in contact with a genetic counselor?

Just to give you some information which was passed along to us -

Prelim amnio results are 95% accurate. My hospital, I don't know if this is a general rule across the board, will only terminate a pregnancy up until the 22nd week.

Get informed as much as you can. My prayers go out to you.

So how did your final results turn out, if you don't mind sharing. 95% gives me a little hope, but the doctor seemed pretty sure that they found a 3rd chromosome 13.

  • I am so sorry.

  • I know have a friend of a friend that delivered a baby with tri 13.  He lived a few hours past delivery.  Her story is beautiful.  It may not be what I (or you) would choose... but I bet you could email her with any questions and support.

  • I am so sorry you are faced with this difficult decision.  You asked what we would do and I can honestly tell you I would have to try to have faith to move mountains.  Do what you know and feel to be the best decision for you, your DH and your baby and then keep faith in that decision.  There is a sweet website called Living with Trisomy 13.  It features 101 children and adults living with Trisomy 13.  It is beautiful because it not only shows these beautiful lives, but the true full spectrum of Trisomy 13.  I think it may be helpful to see the whole spectrum of what "Trisomy 13" can mean.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  • I can't imagine what you are dealing with, and I am sorry I don't have any great advice for you.  One of my sorority sisters from college Ginny had a son with Trisomy 18 (not sure but I think they are very similar).  She was featured on Oprah, and here is the link to the video if you want to watch it https://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Against-the-Odds/14  I will warn you, I cried and cried when I first watched this, I am sure in part b/c I know her personally.  I still cry watching it.  It is truly a beautiful, amazing story with a bittersweet ending, but really opened my eyes to the amount of strength God gives us in certain instances, and that this little boy taught so many a wonderful lesson in his short life.  Oh, and she now has 2 beautiful, healthy children, so the story has a happy ending.  I pray that you get some peace and definitive, solid answers...  Hugs.

Thank you for sharing, I will definitely watch it. And thank you for the hope that a healthy baby is definitely possible.
