Advice Please! 19mo refusing sippy cup w/milk

I have an (almost) 19 month old and (almost) had her off the bottle 2 weeks ago. Then we took a trip that involved a 6 hour flight (each way) and broke down and gave her bottles to keep her calm...After the trip she was sick and we let her continue with them...now that she is basically well we are trying on the sippy cup again and completely failing.

Any advice for a win in this fight would be much appreciated!!

  • I would just keep offering the sippy as much as possible.  It seemed like it took forever for us! One day we just threw out the bottles, and it was sippy or nothing. I had all different kids of sippys to see what she would take to. It finally worked! Good luck~

  • We went cold turkey at 15 months.  It sucked for 2-3 weeks and I was worried about the fluid intake, sometimes only 2-3 ounces a day, or less.  I just loaded up on fruit and veggies and other high liquid foods and made sure we didn't go an entire day without a wet diaper.

  • I'd go cold turkey on the bottles at this point. Will she eat other dairy? If she will, then it's okay if she doesn't drink much milk for a few days. I think once she realizes no more bottle, she'll give in and take the cup.

If she won't even drink water out of the cup, would she drink it from a water bottle or a "grown-up" cup with straw, etc?

  • We just went cold turkey and DD completely boycotted milk. It was stressful, but she eats a ton of dairy and doesn't have any weight issues, so the pedi just told us to keep trying.

At this point, she rarely drinks milk (she drinks a ton of water - always has) and the pedi says it's no big deal because she's a good weight, gets plenty of dairy and gets vitamin D from being outside.

Keep trying - the Playtex straw cups are awesome.

  • I have a similar problem.  My DD is 16 months and hasn't been given a bottle except once (when I was at my wit's end) since the end of May.  She loves water, but it's like pulling teeth to get her to drink milk.  I've had the most success with the Take-n-Toss straw cups.  I also mix a little Ovaltine in, which probably isn't great but at least it gets her to drink some milk.  In addition to that, I usually have to put her in the stroller and take her for a walk to get her to drink any.  Even with all that, she still only drinks maybe 4-8oz per day.  She still nurses 2-3x per day so I don't worry TOO much, but on the other hand I don't want to be leaning on that as much as I am, since I'd like to wean in a few months.

  • Thanks for all the advice, ladies!

I think I am just going to try and push the cups, but not get hung up on the milk (until the bottles are totally gone...). She drinks water out of sippy cups well, but at nap and bedtime cries for a bottle. Augh. At least she likes yogurt and cheese!!

Good luck to everyone else dealing with similar stuff!
