Trying to Get Pregnant

Pre-Trying to Conceive

I have a pap test scheduled in a couple of weeks, at this appointment I will also be talking to the doctor about starting to try to conceive in September. Do you have any questions I should be asking?

  • I talked to my doctor back in March at my yearly. She told me to get on pre-natals right away even though we weren't trying yet. Make sure to eat healthy, and we talked about my PCOS.
  • When I talked to my doctor he of course advised me to hop off BC and told me to not focus too much on trying right away and to let my body attempt to have a cycle on its own and during this time start taking prenatals, exercising and eating healthy! Good luck with everything!

He gave me a script for pre-natals, we talked about my meds and he advised me to change my BP meds now and suggested a few to bring to my PCP, and he told me to have fun :)
  • I had a few health issues I thought might affect pregnancy.

    1) I have frequent migraines.  We talked about what treatments I could use that wouldn't harm a potential fetus (turns out not much--although my chiro saved me from my migraine hell).  We also discussed all my other meds.

    2) I have two spinal injuries that I was worried about.  Turns out they were not a problem, although again, a chiro was a big help with this.

  • First of all, welcome!

Like others have said, unless you have some preexisting health condition, I wouldn't say there are any specific questions that you need to come armed to your appointment with. I would just let your doctor know you are trying to conceive, and getting his/her suggestions for that. I'm fairly certain any general physician who treats women (which is pretty much every GP) has fielded this question and will have some answers that may help you. Like PP have said, you will probably be advised to start taking prenatals, exercise regularly, and watch your diet.

    Good luck to you!

  • Welcome and good luck! I wanted to add that if you or your husband have a family history of genetic disorders you can have tests ran to see if you are carriers. It is expensive so I wouldn't do it unless there is a high risk. I did it because I have a multi-racial family history and there are certain risks for those races.
