2nd Trimester

left side vs right side

Hello ladies,

I am super exhausted.  I did not sleep well last night..hell or for the past 5 months.  Just wondering if you all are consciously sleeping on your left side.  I have been reading and recommdation is the left side.  My baby loves my left side, so it is not that comfortable for me to sleep on that side.  So I turn in my right and I feel bad bc its the "wrong" side. Anyone else having this issue?????

Re: left side vs right side

  • i think it is really just on your side that matters?  and important for you to get rest - however you accomplish it!  i have to have pillows everywhere to keep myself comfortable.

  • I flip back and forth between my right side and left side all night long. It's fine to sleep on your right side.
  • I'm a big right sleeper and go back and forth through the night. I have heard of the left side thing due to pressure on your ciatic(sp?) nerve but I vote for sleep as long as nothing is going numb or anything. :)

  • Left is best, but right is fine. My little bean moves more when I lay on my left as well. I toss and turn through the night and I have so many pillows around me that even when I wake up on my back I'm not flat on my back. It's all good as long as I get some sleep!

  • I asked my doctor about this because I'm a back sleeper and was so paranoid that I was not sleeping at all. He said that it doesn't matter how you sleep until later in your pregnancy and by that point you'll be tossing and turning so much that you won't be laying in any one position long enough for it to matter. He actually said to enjoy sleep while you can get it! But if you're that paranoid that it's ruining your sleep talk to  your doctor.

  • I asked my doctor this and I was told that either side is fine.  Rest in more important that worrying about what side is better.

  • My Dr also said either side is fine. I can still even sleep on my back until I get bigger. Even then, you can sleep on your back - your body will tell you when it is time to turn to one side. you can even sleep on your stomach until it becomes uncomfortable.

  • I've found that sticking a pillow under my belly really helps.  I rotate it from side to side throughout the night.
  • I go back and forth.  I got a Boppy Wedge and it's great for extra comfort.  I do have to move it every time I turn over, but no big deal really.

  • With my first pregnancy, my doctor really urged left side sleeping.  However, a lot has changed in the last 8 or so years and now encourages either side.  Research shows which side doesn't really matter.

  • I always tried left side with my DD and could never get comfortable. When I went into labor they kept trying to have me rotate from left to right, but they finally let that go because when I was on my right her heart rate would drop very low. I say do what's most comfortable because your body knows best.

  • I am all over at night, my doctor said my body will tell me if it's not a good spot. I wouldn't worry to much.

  • I flip back and forth a lot because I just can't seem to get comfortable.  My OB said that it doesn't really matter but they recommend the left so that baby gets more blood/oxygen flow BUT he also said that if you wake up on your back it's because it's your body telling you that you need to switch positions.

  • I go back and forth all night long, but I usually like my right side (even though I think he likes that side better too, but I just feel more comfortable on that side as that is the side I've always slept on). I'm sure it's not really that big of an issue.

  • I am at 26 weeks and I find when I end up on my right side my leg falls asleep. I'm definitely less crampy on the left side but I do tend to flip back and forth. When my arm or leg falls asleep my body wakes up and I roll over.

That aside, I'm getting terrible nights' sleep these days, but I hear that's par for course. I'm up at 2 am most nights wide awake. Thankfully hubby works nights so I come to the living room and join him for an our of t.v. LOL
